Not all the time but many times usually when logged out for a few hours when I go back into my minecraft Realm it then says I fell from a high place a high place. Problem is it happens if I leave the game from a high place like my mountain home or not and even if I just slept in a bed at my mountain home safe on level ground up in the mountian. It shows me falling and dieing over spawn point and I obviously die at spawn point but I respawn by my bed in the mountains and have to run all the way back to spawn to collect my things there because that is where it thinks I died I guess.  So you lose all your levels doing this and if some is close to spawn and has full inventory and cant or dose not think to pick up your stuff it will despawn before you can get back. 

Also had this happen to my friend who was in with me in my old realm which ai deleted because thought it happened because it became unstable but guess not because it is happening in completely new realm also.and she was on an iPad when it happened to her. 

It also ahappened to my daughter playing in this same new realm we are in now but for her she was in the nether and when came back into game it said she was killed by a drown but she was in the nether and it despawned her at last bed she slept in but her stuff was not in nether or where she last slept and we never did find it. She was playing with same version and operating system and device as me.
