I have an iron golem tied to a fence post using a lead, whenever I quit the game and rejoin the lead turns invisible/disappears but the golem still acts like he's constrained to the fence. After a while (I've never seen it happen) the lead is completely gone- no lead on the ground, and the golem wanders away.
