The problem:
The subtitle "Sign wobbles", demonstrating the sound that signs (both normal and hanging) emit when a player tries to edit a waxed sign, is not differentiated for normal and hanging signs. This leads to problems when translating to languages where normal and hanging signs don't have a clear common noun.
Steps to reproduce:
- Start Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Go to Options → Language, and select English (US) - the source language for translations.
- Go to Options → Music & Sounds, and set "Show subtitles" setting to "ON".
- Create a new world in creative mode
- Place down any normal sign and any hanging sign
- Take Honeycomb and wax both signs by right-clicking them, making them uneditable
- Right-click each sign with an empty hand and see the subtitle corresponding to the sound: Sign wobbles
- Go to https://crowdin.com/translate/minecraft/all/ and search for the string
Observed behaviour:
Both signs use the same string for the subtitle, there is only one string used for it in the Crowdin project.
Expected behaviour
Both signs might have identical subtitles in English, but there are different strings for each in Crowdin project for languages, who use different nouns for their names.
Links:
Search filter for Sign wobbles, demonstrating that there is only one string with this text in English (US)
Notes:
- The images Subtitle_normal_sign.png and Subtitle_hanging_sign.png demonstrate the subtitle in English, "Sign wobbles"
- The image Subtitle_in_Esperanto.png demonstrates an example of language with the problem: "Elpendaĵo ŝanceliĝas" means "Hanging sign wobbles", and "Ŝildeto ŝanceliĝas" ("Sign wobbles") would not fit hanging signs
