Pistons do not detect when a diagonally adjacent redstone block powering it is removed

      Redstone blocks will power any pistons (and only pistons/sticky pistons) in the following area, represented by stained glass:

      However, they will only cause block updates to the following area:

      Which leaves any pistons in this area in their prior powered/unpowered state when the redstone block is moved:

      Other redstone signals (such as a redstone torch) will trigger the pistons this same way, however the pistons detect when they're removed and work normally - they only seem to get stuck with redstone blocks.

      Note: I noticed a couple of similar cases have been closed as duplicates. Please note that this particular case is NOT a BUD and does not have any reaction to block updates until the redstone block itself is completely removed from its position. Only at this point will the next block update will trigger a response.
