app launches into blank black screen since update to or clean install of v. 0.8.0 (release)

What I expected to happen was...:
The app launching properly, displaying the "home" screen with 'play' button etc.

What actually happened was...:
The app launches into a blank black screen, except for the usual Android controls / status bar. Would remain in that state for ? .... never waited longer than 15 min. When tapping somewhere on the screen or the Android menu button I receive a message that the app is not responding, option to wait or quit. Returning to home screen and then back to the game via task manager doesn't help, issue persists.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Update to MCPE 0.8.0 release from previos version (me: 0.7.6) or clean install 0.8.0
device: ZT Pad, Zenithink C71, running Android ICS 4.0.3
2. Launch app - no matter how, from install screen or app launcher or home screen link
3. enjoy the black screen

additional info
> Version 0.7.6. (and before) running fine! Even with additional textures and usage of third-party tools like PocketInvEditor, BlockLauncher
app purchased from Amazon AppStore (GER)

troubleshooting steps taken

• repeatingly de- and reinstalled latest version, including clearing cache and removing user data and existing maps
• additionally deinstalled all MCPE-related apps and tools, again incl. all user data + cache clearance, then clean-installed game
• install on SD card (as before) and in internal storage
• installed app downloaded from different source
