Using commands, you can place a directionless hopper (or possibly pointing upwards?). It happens when tiledata is set to 1 (i.e. /setblock ~ ~ ~ hopper 1). So far I have only tested a few things, I will do more when I have time. (NOTE: When I say slot 1 in the hopper, I mean slot 0 if it were commands i.e. the last slot in a hopper is slot 5, not slot 4 like in a command). When a normal hopper is facing down into the directionless hopper, items will transfer as normal except the last item to go in always appears in the first slot, with the other items shifting along one but remaining in the same order. (i.e. if I put in 5 items (item1, item2, item3, item4, item5) in that order, then they would appear in the order item5, item1, item2, item3, item4. If I put a 6th item into the normal hopper above (item6), then it will swap item6 with the item in the first slot of the directionless hopper (item5). item5 appears in the second slot of the normal hopper. This item swapping ONLY occurs if I put extra items in slot 1 of the normal hopper, not any other slot. Note this only occurs when items are transferred by a downwards pointing hopper above the directionless hopper, not when items are dropped onto the directionless hopper. The directionless hopper works as normal when the items are dropped. When the hopper above the directionless hopper is not pointing downwards into it, then the item swapping occurs every time (still only slot 1 in the normal hopper). A hopper below the directionless hopper can still take items from it as usual. The directionless hopper does not push items out in any direction (only swapping items as mentioned). Just tested, chests also do the item swapping when placed above the directionless hopper.
