When I was in my world I killed a couple of cows to get leather to make leather armor but since I only got 1 leather i was able to create 1 leather chestplate out of 1 thing. It also works with diamods and iron.
To recreate this simply get 1 iron,diamond,or leather and try to create a piece of amor.
