When i spawned in my new minecraft world, all the mobs i found spawned on land. Later on in the game after killing them all for resources, they kept spawning in water and remained stationary for a very long time. These mobs where pig, cow, sheep, chicken and the baby version of all these animals. Sometimes, hostile mobs would do the same but it was quite rare.
