I decided to test out Hardcore mode's new option to spectate the world when you die. I converted the world to the preset, "water world". After i drowned in this world,i spectated the world. I flew over layer 255 while I had the debug screen turned on and the game crashed. Before this, I went over layer 255. It was only when the debug screen was turned on that I crashed.
