When I try to join a multiplayer public server on any version less than 1.8.3, my game crashes and refuses to allow me to play on a server without 1.8.3

      I wanted to play on a public server on any version less than 1.8.3

      What I expected was to join the server.

      What really happened was the server and game crashed

      Steps to trigger bug:

      1.) open minecraft launcher
      2.) change version to something lower than 1.8.3
      3.) click play, then go to multiplayer
      4.) join any server
      5.) crash
