Example: If you play on a server which has render distance set for example to 10 and your client to 10, you will get significantly more FPS than when you set your render distance for example to 20. You do not see more chunks but your computer for some reason does a lot more work. (For @Sonic : the fact that you don't see more chunks is not the issue. The issue is the lower Framerate)
