When I entered a nether portal in my survival world, it spawned on a ledge above the lava but spawned me in on the side with a drop to the lava; see the screenshot. This made me die and lose all my stuff and it was impossible to avoid. The nether portal should generate extra obsidian like it does if it spawns fully above lava to give the player a chance of survival.
