I observed that smoke particles can pass through solid blocks instead of being stopped by them.
First screenshot: Reproduction - you can clearly see smoke passing through sandstone.
Second screenshot: Circled smoke passed through cobblestone from the torch underneath.
Third screenshot: Smoke is visible over quartz blocks, fire is underneath.

To reproduce:
Create a building similiar to this on the screenshots and observe smoke passing through solid blocks.
