When removing a block, it stays rendered visually for a short amount of time although you can mine other blocks behind it, replace it, etc.
If you place a block, it will sometimes not render visually but it will physically be there, so you can place blocks on it and see the outline.
The rendering seems to speed up if you change the angle you look at the block from, by moving for example, otherwise it takes several seconds.
To reproduce: Use a shovel and mine some sand or dirt (or mine any other block in a fast way), some blocks will not disappear visually for some time. You can also place multiple blocks quickly and some of them will not appear immediately.
