If I have an item frame directly below a solid block, as in the case of a cave/hidey-hole, and I remove the item from the frame, the item jumps all the way to the surface, not always in an obvious place. In some biomes, it could be impractical to find the item before it despawns.
What I expected to happen was...:
The item should pop out and bounce off the ceiling much like a drop from a mined block.
What actually happened was...:
The item animates client-side as I would expect but disappears after one second. On the server the item has tunneled through the rock onto the surface, usually within a radius of 5 blocks from the item frame, but sometimes travels sideways if there are missing blocks.
This looks very similar to what you would see if you built an item elevator, except that it also tunnels through solid blocks such as stone.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a new world in creative with cheats
2. Dig straight down 10-20 blocks. Make sure there are no caves on the way.
3. Dig horizontally a 3-tall passage for 10 blocks
4. At the end of the passage dig a 3x3x3 cube hidey hole. On the top of the back put a row of stone and on those stone place an item frame. (See screenshot)
5. Drop to survival mode
7. /kill @e[type=Item]
6. Place an item in a frame and wait a second (to avoid bug MC-59363)
7. Click to remove the item from the frame.
8. Try to look for the item and pick it up. If you cannot find the item, go to creative mode and fly up through the hole to the surface.
9. OR, run /tp @p @e[type=Item] to look for where the item went.
