The world goes black or unrendered when certain items are selected for use like torches, grass, poppy etc. Does not happen for all items

What I expected to happen was...:
I expected to select a torch for use

What actually happened was...:
At first the world went unrendered, I could see through everything, only water and lava remained. With later testing the world would go black except the sky.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Select an affected item in the hot bar to use
2. The world glitches

The attached screenshot shows the selected item, which is a torch, and the effect it causes. The item and other certain items go black and are unrecognizable.
