I was trying to place a stair block by crouching and placing it on the side of the block I was standing on.

I accidentally placed the stair on the the block I was standing on and it eclipsed my player.

Crouch on the lower half of a stair block and place another stair block on top of it. (Note that this may take several tries to recreate). This also works to place the block behind you, and your character will also be able to move through this block. (The screenshot provided is of this case).
