In Survival mode

1) Place an item frame overhead (i.e. so that it is parallel to the ground, facing down)

2) Place a map in the item frame (verified with a fully populated map.)

3) Knock the map out of the frame

-> Map drop animation takes place, but no map either drops to the ground or into your inventory if you are standing directly underneath.

Verified in both multiplayer and single player.
