If you are in creative and open your inventory, then click on an item (So it is following/on your cursor) then exit your inventory, when you next open your inventory, it will still be on your cursor. If you change to survival and die when it is still on your cursor, it won't drop where you died (But the other stuff will). If you try this in survival, it will just snap to the first available slot when you exit your inventory.
