I noticed that some items, specifically weapons and tools, do not appear in the recipe book after acquiring the required materials. You may craft the tools or items manually, which then updates the recipe book for that item.

Normally, once I've collected wood or iron for the first time, and crafted or smelted them down to their other forms (sticks and ingots), I would then see all the available crafting table items, whether in the red or green area of the recipe book. That includes all of the wooden or iron tools or weapons that can be crafted with those items.

It was only after manually crafting those tools or weapons (or other items) that they appeared in the recipe book.

How to Reproduce
1. Collect wood and break down into planks and sticks
2. Open recipe book in crafting table and toggle "show all" for recipes
3. Craft a wooden pick axe, sword, etc. manually
4. Repeat steps with other recipes and materials, like stone, iron, glass, etc.
