placing torches on sides of blocks would not place

when placing that torch on the north facing wall the torch would not place even after restarting my minecraft 3 or 4 times

the torch would not be placed

Steps to Reproduce:
1. building a wall out of place white wood 4 4 4
2. place torches all sides
