So I build a overworld squid farm that use soul sand that created a bubble columm to pushe them to the surface. I build the farm the correct way and I'm 100% sure that all water block are source blocks and the farm is build in a river biome. For some reason the squids don't go up at all, looking at them is looks like they got stuck in the water bubbles and can't move at all or very little in any direction.
