In survival mode, Zombies will walk towards me from almost 50 blocks away. All I read in the change log was that they could move around from farther away, not that they could see you from farther away.

Just try spawning a zombie in creative mode, fly about 50 blocks away, and then switch to survival mode. It should be able to see you.
