adult chickens dont try to swim up, if they stand on a lower slab, and above the slab is a water sourceblock above that another sourceblock. by being partially in the water they start to drown, without rising and eventually hey die. baby chickens are too small to be in the water, so they dont drown, but if they grow, they will eventually die too...
