When taking down trees, I work my way to the top and place blocks under me as I progressively go higher, but when I am on my way down by mining stone or wood, it will push me to the side and if I am not crouching I will slide off and fall all the way down.  Even stone pillars I use to gain access to high places, I must be careful that the game does not slide me off while mining my way back down
