Horses will sometimes turn invisible after dismounting, although reloading the world will bring them back. The horse can also be detected when they're invisible, as they still make noises. Also, they can occasionally teleport away from the player for about a second after the player dismounts from the horse. After the horse teleports away they will teleport right back to where the player dismounted.
