Ender dragon is not in the End.

I spawned off the main island and didn't have anything to build a bridge so I jumped off. On returning after dying the ender dragon was no where to be found. Explored the entire map but cannot find it.

Jumped to my death again, restarted computer, reloaded game, entered the end again, still no dragon, no exit portal, and I have explored the entire end area.
