The bug
With the introduction of the Realms tab to the Minecraft Launcher, players have the ability to launch directly into a Realm after selecting a version in the Minecraft Launcher. However, the version selection dropdown menu does not prevent users from selecting a snapshot version, which do not support Realms.
Upon launching the version, players are presented with a server error message as expected, though they should not have been allowed to launch Realms in the version in the first place.
It is important to keep the version selector in place as players may want to use modified versions of the game, though snapshots should be excluded.
How to reproduce
- Open the Minecraft Launcher, and navigate to Minecraft: Java Edition -> Realms
- Select a snapshot version, and launch a Realm
The game launches successfully, though the player is unable to join the Realm
