Ive noticed this going on for a while and no one seems to make a big deal about it, But When i was updating Minecraft: Java Edition for Windows, I had to close it because i needed to leave soon and my battery was dying. I clicked cancel but it didn't cancel for some reason. So i tried something on my Desktop a little bit later into the day.

Canceling the Update on prompt will still run the update and open the application. The window will be "Updating", Yet will have Cancelling as the status. This affects the MSI executable for the Windows and potentially Mac Versions of the Launcher.
