[MCPE-9960] Inventory items can go to invisible slots

                <project id="10200" key="MCPE">Minecraft (Bedrock codebase)</project>

Description revised as of 0.15.90.2 rplatham:
When picking up items, the game does not seem to check to see if the stack should be split so that some of it stays on the ground because picking up all of it would overfill the player's inventory.

Example to Reproduce

Fill all slots of your inventory and include two stacks of the same item (for this example, we'll use two full stacks (64) of coal)

Place some more coal (say 16) in a chest nearby.

Drop one full stack of coal from your inventory on the ground.

Go get the 16 coal from the chest.

Now pick up the full stack of coal from the ground.

Observe that you now have two full stacks of coal in your inventory and there is no coal on the ground.

I expected that the full stack of coal on the ground would become a stack of 16 coal on the ground since your inventory could only hold 48 more coal.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Old Description

Add a full stack of some items to a chest

Add a non-full stack of the same item to your inventory

Fill all other slots of your inventory with anything else

Open the chest (Screenshot 1)

Long-click the item stack in the chest and transfer all of it to your inventory (Screenshot 2)

It works and nothing remains in the chest.
A stack of the remaining items is now stored in an invisible slot of your inventory. (Screenshot 3)

It isn't accessible directly, but if you try to send more items of the same type to your inventory from a chest they will stack on it (Visually they disappear but in fact they stack there, the problem doesn't happens when you send the item from a crafting table output, only from a chest)

If the item type is a combustible or something that can be burnt, the "invisible" stack is still available in the furnace UI.

It's not the only case where it happens but it's the easiest to reproduce.
In the screens I managed to make all the wood disappear from my inventory but that wasn't voluntary and I don't know exactly how, the inventory is sometimes a little strange when there are some invisible stacks around... (Screenshot 4)

Other way to reproduce by kaleb418:

1. Fill inventory up with random items.
2. Say, for instance, you have a stack of coal in your inventory. Throw out the stack of coal onto the ground.
3. Get another stack of coal in your inventory. Place down a chest. Make sure your inventory is still full, with one stack of coal in your inventory and one stack on the ground.
4. Change game mode to survival.
5. Put some coal in the chest, but still keep some in your inventory so there are no empty slots.
6. Pick up the coal on the ground. It will all go into your inventory, and the remainder of the coal that doesn't go into the visible slot will seemingly disappear.

Update by nighter
You can see at the beginning that I drop a 64 stack of cobblestone onto the ground and replace my final inventory slot with 16 cobblestone. Collecting the previously dropped full stack fills my inventory, and the extra cobblestone disappears.
</comment>

I just 'picked up' a load of logs when my inventory was full. (Possibly because of items in the invisible inventory from before 0.14.0, but I'm not 100%) Either way, it's still an issue.
</comment>

A work around I've used in the last few versions (up to 0.13.2) to get those items to my regular inventory without crafting them is to first empty my inventory into a chest. Then standing about 3 blocks away from an anvil, I place the stacks of two of those normally invisible slots into the slots in the anvil and exit the anvil gui. Those two stacks are dropped on the ground. I then repeat this until the stacks in the invisible slots are all on the ground and then pick them up again.

Also I have noticed the same as other people. If you break a chest with that item it happens. And upon dying It will come back even though all inventory slots were filled with other things. Also I noticed you can still craft with those items.
</comment>

Had (What I assumed to be enough space) to collect the diamonds I had been mining. I had less than a stack in my inventory. I through out my useless blocks to make room for my recently found diamonds. I collected them and did see them disappear. When I went to put them in a chest...gone! I had about 20 diamonds disappear!

Am I correct in understanding, there is no way to recover these as they are not "invisible"?

This is the 3rd time I have been burned by this bug. Previously I had encountered it and chalked it up to inexperienced miner. This time I made sure I had ample empty slots. Very frustrating.
</comment>

From what I've seen when examining my level, the inventory is stored using NBT format and the invisible stacks look just like any of the others (no sign of corruption).

When you are picking up important stacks make sure you have enough slots.
</comment>

I eventually decided to simply use the stack up and make some stairs and slab with it. My concern is that I'm about to start mining obsidian and making a railway. I would hate for my obsidian or rail to disappear.

Also... suicide will generally come with a pretty high loss of XP, so I was hoping to avoid that.

I was hoping that long pressing a blank hotbar or something would release the hidden item.
</comment>

Picking up stacks of items can overfill your inventory.
How to reproduce: fill all your inventory slots including an incomplete stack of something (we’ll use 40 cobblestone as an example). Try to add another amount of that something (30 cobblestone) from a chest by long press, or picking up as a stack item off the ground. The key is that the amount added must overflow the max stack size (64 for most things, 16 for eggs, etc.). What I expected: the stack being added should split so your inventory stack is full (64 stack of cobblestone) and the remainder (6 stack of cobblestone) stays in the chest or on the ground. What happens every time I do this: your inventory stack is correct but the remainder is not left in the chest or dropped on the ground. Some users are reporting that they are getting stacks greater than 64 when they do this, I could not reproduce this. Below, I show that the remainder stack is somewhere in your inventory, it’s not visible, but can be recovered. Note: this bug also occurs if you use a long press to move part of a stack from a chest and the portion you move overflows the stack you already have. This bug does not occur when picking up single items or adding items from a chest by single tapping repeatedly. This bug does not occur when collecting stacks when the stack in your inventory is already full. [This bug could be causing other errors if many “invisible” stacks start overwriting other data.]

Specific Example (Russ confirmed all parts reproducible):

Fill all inventory slots with random stuff including a stack of 40 cobblestone (and no other cobblestone), a pickaxe and at least 2 sticks (helpful later).

Place that stack of cobblestone somewhere in your hotbar too.

Move a stack of 30 cobblestone from a chest into your inventory by long press. I expected to see 64 cobblestone in hotbar and a stack of 6 cobblestone in the chest, instead I see 64 cobblestone in the hotbar slot and none in the chest. This is the bug, and the rest of the stuff below are side effects of having an “invisible stack of 6 cobblestone in your inventory”.

If I place or drop those 64 cobblestone blocks in the world, the hotbar slot and associated inventory slot go empty and it appears I have no cobblestone in my inventory.

If I then mine 1 more cobblestone, the hotbar item fills with 7 cobblestone but the inventory slot remains empty and I can pick up something else.

If I replace the cobblestone in the hotbar with something else, the cobblestone goes invisible again until I have an empty hotbar slot and I collect more cobblestone.

I can drop the cobblestone from the hotbar and pick it up and everything seems fine again (cobblestone is in the hotbar and inventory slot)

Instead of, or after 3(1), if I check the crafting table/menu, I can make various stone items (stonecutter, sword, shovel, axe, etc. and crafting them will succeed until the invisible stone runs out) even though I can’t see any cobblestone in my inventor

There are several ways to cause this bug. You can also make a non-full invisible stack visible again by adding some of that stackable item to your inventory when you have at least one empty slot. For example, if you invisible stack is 6 eggs and you have an empty slot in your inventory, picking up 1 egg will show a stack of 7 eggs in your inventory.
</comment>
