They seem to work fine in Single-player/local mode. Zoom 1,3, and 4, stay blank, and presumably recenter to an unknown location. See <del>MCPE-17647</del> and rerddit thread at https://www.reddit.com/r/Mojira/comments/5njy8a/mcpe17647_zoomed_maps_losing_their_data_when/
</comment>

Maps work at Zoom 0, but on zoom 1 they go useless, then on Zoom 2, they work again, but they recenter themselves, and it doesn't seem to matter where you were when you created them. I am researching this further, to find out how they change at zoom 3 and zoom 4, and I will post more when I have more info.
</comment>
                            <comment id="351413" author="specialistol" created="Thu, 29 Dec 2016 19:27:23 +0100"  >
Yes, but the map is tied to the location you've created it, so you need to re-explore the same area (and more, since the map shows a bigger area now). It won't populate if you are in a different location.

The only reasonable approach to work around the issue is to carry stacks of paper and a crafting table/anvil with you. When you get to the area you want to explore, craft a blank map, use it, then immediately zoom it to the final level you want it to be, before starting to explore.

The current behavior is not reasonable. They should either not lose the map data, so that whatever has been explored doesn't need to be re-explored, or the developers should change the crafting mechanics of zoomed in maps to one of the following (which are fair bit more useful) or something alike:

Empty maps can be zoomed in. This allows creating maps at the zoom level we want without having to go through multiple steps, or having to re-explore. Ideal solution would be this plus zoomed in maps not loosing data.

A smaller map can be combined into the bigger map by transferring its data, if they depict the same area, or bigger maps are created using a grid of aligning smaller maps.

Either option is better than the current behavior: Craft and empty map, use it, zoom it to the final level you want, then start exploring. If you want to zoom it further, then you have to re-explore.
</comment>

It is this issue, which was incorrectly resolved as fixed: <del>MCPE-16948</del>
