Basically, bonemeal doesn't work on tree saplings. I've tested in a new pure survival world and in new creative converted to survival worlds.

I can grow up trees with bone meal in creative, Survival.
I have reproduce the steps from Russel, and the thing from the pictures... I got always nice littel and big trees I think I have a green thumb. If I try this with the dirt above the sapling, the generate tree remove the dirt ( looks normal)

Both are bugs. The bug of having the dirt replace the tree blocks is known.
To test, I created a new creative flat world, put different tree sapplings and bonemeal into a chest, quit, converted to survival and tried planting and applying bonemeal to saplings and 2x2 sapling groups. I planted them on bare dirt and on grass. None of them grew into trees. I saw the green sparkling particles, but nothing else. I expected trees to grow.
</comment>
