[MC-73] Green arrow bug on maps in frames

                <project id="10400" key="MC">Minecraft: Java Edition</project>

If you destroy a map in a frame, the green arrow showing where the map is remains on the map.

After placing it a few times, it no longer appears.

In the attached image, you can see there is no green arrow at the current placement, the two to the south are not there, the one to the north is in a friends house.

This ticket exists since 2012. The code base has changed a lot since then, especially the part of code that manages maps. It therefore is unlikely that the issue that you're experiencing is the same as this one, even if it looks like it is.
</comment>

It got fixed by game restart.

It does not occur 100%, i.e. I can't reproduce it now. Maybe the item frame needs to be there when you load the save, or needs to exist for some time.

A lot of these old bug reports about maps were marked "Won't Fix" because the functionality of maps changed and the reports were no longer considered relevant. There's a lot of overlap between the existing reports, and they'd be a lot of work to untangle and find what's still relevant to the current version of Minecraft.
</comment>

                            <comment id="124929" author="jajcus" created="Fri, 13 Dec 2013 20:49:05 +0100"  >
<del>The same problem appears in 1.7.3, A perfectly working map (with user position on it) stops working after a frame with a map copy is removed (or some similar action).</del>

<del>"Won't Fix", really? That would be quite disappointing…</del>

Oops… this issue is indeed about something else which may not be a problem any more. But the problem I was referring too and which was described by some of the issues marked as duplicate of this one is still there and it is better described by <del>MC-3416</del> and <del>MC-4068</del>.

So, for anybody who came here frustrated by disappearing marker on a map – go look at <a href="https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-3416" title="Player location marker invisible on map (wrong Z-Order).                             <comment id="119857" author="dolphin263" created="Sun, 17 Nov 2013 18:25:25 +0100"  >
Thought we would retest since we had not tried it since upgrading to 1.7 on Minecraft nor 1.7 in java, but the bug is still present. Confirmed in MC 1.7.2 using java 1.7 64 bit on windows. Restarting the server helps for a bit, but eventually the bug reasserts itself. We're going back to using the copy map workaround I described earlier, which we have been using since we started framing maps on our server.

Also, note that the biggest problem that happens with this bug is not the extra green pointer, but losing the player pointers. The player pointer appears behind the map rather than over it, and the map does not update as it is moved around. This means while the player is within the map region and away from the edge, they are invisible, and thus the maps are unusable. If a map is in a frame and you are on a MP server, this seems to always happen eventually, but not necessarily immediately. Restarting the server sometimes fixes the problem temporarily.
</comment>
                            <comment id="118952" author="wyrdnexus" created="Tue, 12 Nov 2013 08:26:06 +0100"  >
Just to clarify, there are several manifestations of this bug, which keep being marked as duplicates of this one.

However, this bug was reported as being caused by destroying a frame containing a map, while the cause most are pointing to is a little different.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Make a map.
2. Make a copy of that map.
3. Place either in a frame.
4. Leave the area, select the map in your inventory and take a look at the arrows.
5. Now return and look at the arrows on the map in the frame.

Hopefully this helps.
</comment>
                            <comment id="118931" author="burny" created="Tue, 12 Nov 2013 04:06:14 +0100"  >
Since <del>MC-33254</del> was moved here. I'd like to add the issue that was described there:

Maps also show no longer the current position if the error happens. This is surely related to the issue here,
but makes maps much more unusable than just a buggy green marker…

PS: I could resolve the issue with maps not showing my position. Since the private server I play on changed the Java version from 1.6 to 1.7 it works again.
PPS: Broke again after a while, was many just the server restart?
</comment>
                            <comment id="118840" author="dolphin263" created="Mon, 11 Nov 2013 23:25:48 +0100"  >
I'd also like to point out that now that framed-maps stretch and allow you to stitch together multiple frames, more people are putting maps in frames. In MP, however, this bug makes these maps unusable. Because framed maps are more desirable in 1.7.x, this bug is becoming more common.

On my server, we are working around this issue by keeping maps either entirely wall mounted, or entirely player held. Map #0-9 are player held maps, and these maps are never mounted on walls. Map # 10-19 are wall mounted copies of Map#0-9. A shell script copies map0.dat-map9.dat to map10.dat-map19.dat during nightly backups. This keeps the wall mounted maps somewhat up-to-date and works around the problem. However, this workaround has the disadvantage that the wall-mounted locations are not available on the player maps, and it's hard to enforce – if a player doesn't understand the process, they can mount a copy in the player range in a frame, and cause a random player to loose their pointer.
</comment>

This issue has been around and reported since v1.4 when maps were introduced. It has been incorrectly marked as resolved, and then reopened, at least a dozen times since then.

Not a major issue in SP, but on an MP server, it can really get in the way and makes Maps far less useful.

If the Mojang team has no intention of fixing it, just tell us that, instead of telling us its fixed.
</comment>

My particular case:

4/4 map zoom

happened with the second item-framed map, first was fine

first was just off edge of map (but still showed)

second was near original placement
(not sure which of these make any difference)
