[MC-5220] Absolutely no sound playing, even if volume is maximized

                <project id="10400" key="MC">Minecraft: Java Edition</project>

After downloading and installing a fresh version of Minecraft 1.4.5 or 1.4.6, no sound happens whatsoever. Pressing F3 + S does not fix the issue.

My sound sliders are all the way up and I am using the default LWJGL and LWJGL Mac native files.

To recreate:

Back up minecraft folder

Delete minecraft folder

Force update to grab all of the latest files

Create a new world (Game mode and world type don't matter)

Walk around, try to play music discs, light TNT, or do anything else that is known to cause a sound event.

Notice that no sound happens.

I can play Pandora radio, but when I run Minecraft, I get no sound after completely removing my ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft folder (not just the resources folder, but the whole minecraft configuration folder. Not only do I not get in-game sounds (picking up, attacking cows, etcetera) but I also get no interface sounds anymore (like clicking buttons to start single player or multiplayer.

The resources folder is completely empty, so I tried downloading a resources file form the internets, but I still get no sound..
</comment>

I had to actually close down Minecraft and reopen it before I could get it working. Several others had the same problem.
We'd been playing for well over and hour so all sounds should have been loaded etc. One minute they were on, next they were off.
</comment>

New sounds are downloaded while in game and not while updating the game.
</comment>
