[MC-4068] Map Markers Behave Unpredictably

                <project id="10400" key="MC">Minecraft: Java Edition</project>

I was out walking to place item frames in villages with maps in them so that I could locate the villages from the copy of these maps which I held in my inventory.

So I placed an item frame in the first village and attached a copy of my existing map to the item frame and at this point there were no problems.

I walked on to the next village where I would place my second item frame with another copy of my existing map. I reached the 2nd village and placed an item frame and attached a copy of my existing map to it.

Here is where the problem (BUG) started. I left the 2nd village and noticed that the white marker indicating my position was completly gone on the map I was holding which was another copy of the two that I had placed in the two villages.

So I tried to resolve this by moving back to the 2nd village and removing the item frame there with the map in it. When I did this the green markers was still present on the copy that I held (like reported bug <del>MC-73</del>) but this didn't help, the white marker was still gone.

After that I made more copies of my map to check if the white marker would show up on them but it didn't.

Instead the green markers were still present on all the copies of this map that is, even the marker that I had removed in the 2nd village by removing the item frame. Exactly like bug <del>MC-73</del>.

What I had expected to happen was that when I placed one or more copies of my map in item frames I would see green markers on the copy which I held and of course also my own location (the white marker). And again what happened was that the white marker disappeared on my map after placing two item frames with copies of my map. Additional bug was <del>MC-73</del> (green marker still present after removing second item frame with map copy in it).

(1. Refers to the image attachment: bug.png)(This image file has been edited in Windows Paint in order to better explain the bug)
-------------------------------------------------------

When I logged in again both green markers was gone and the white marker had come back.

(2. Refers to the image attachment: 2012-12-02_13.57.04.png)
-------------------------------------------------------

I logged in again and I went to the first village to remove the remaining item frame. I removed it and went for home and I opened the stack of copied maps but now the green marker was still present after removing the last item frame from the first village.

(3. Refers to the image attachment: 2012-12-02_14.59.54.png)
-------------------------------------------------------

I logged in again a fourth time and then as expected the green marker was gone (marking the first village)

(4. Refers to the image attachment: 2012-12-02_15.21.41.png
One-line fix included." class="issue-link" data-issue-key="MC-3416"><del>MC-3416</del>, and may have always been that way, making this a duplicate.
</comment>

The player arrows are rendered underneath the filled area of the map so they are hidden. If you get to the edge of the map, you can sometimes see the white arrow peeking out from underneath. This is present in multiplayer as well as single player.

In my experience, this has nothing to do with how many maps are in item frames. I have created 4 copies of my map and placed only one on the wall in an item frame, and the bug still happens.
</comment>
                            <comment id="177674" author="deltonesan" created="Mon, 21 Jul 2014 19:41:31 +0200"  >
This still happens in 1.7.9. I am on a minecraft realms server and nobody's maps are working anymore. This probably calls for a server reset to fix, but it hinders map exploration when you can't see your location on the map.

Edit: I think that multiplayer should be added to this issue, as nobody's map on my server is working properly right now, presumably due to this item frame issue.
</comment>
                            <comment id="151216" author="uhmdown" created="Tue, 15 Apr 2014 10:53:22 +0200"  >
Still happens on 1.7.8/14w11b and is very annoying.

Its fairly easy to reproduce:

1. Start a creative world and create a map. Make 3 clones of it (total nr of the same map is now 4).
2. Place 4 item frames and place 3 map clones in the first 3 of them. (so far so good; 3 green markers and 1 white marker are visible on the map).
3. Place the 4th map clone in the 4th frame. BUG: 4th green marker doesn't appear ! White marker is still present though.
4. Now clone a 5th map. Look at the map. BUG: White marker has now disappeared. But you can now see 4 green markers.

I think I have seen this happen with only 3 total markers, but I don't know why its sometimes 3 and sometimes 4. Perhaps its if you share the map with someone else. Because then you'll have 2 white markers and will reach a total of 4 with just 2 green markers.
But I've also seen it happen with less when moving in and out of range of individual markers several times.

Restarting the server can fix this temporarily because it removes green markers that are out of range, bringing the total of markers below 4 again. But if you get within range of them and they're added to the map and you reach 2-3 green markers, you risk having the bug reappear.

If you knock the maps out of the item frames so the total number of markers goes below 4 again (e.g 1 player marker, 2 green), you get your white marker back.
</comment>
                            <comment id="139084" author="jajcus@jajcus.net" created="Sat, 8 Feb 2014 12:35:48 +0100"  >
@ezekielelin

I have tested this in 14w05b. It seems like things are a bit better now – the behaviour seems more predictable – when up to four markers are to be displayed on the map (including all item frames and all players holding the map), everything is ok (in 1.7.4 the problems used to appear even if only one or two markers where shown).

But the fifth marker to be displayed won't show – if another player gets a copy of the map, or the map is placed in another item frame, the new marker won't be visible. Additionally the map previously installed on an item frame by one player won't be visible by the other player (maps disappearing from the item frames seem related to the markers disappearing from the map).

When more than four markers are displayed then it is not longer obvious which four will be visible – this changes when players pick-up, drop or install the map copies on item frames.

The bug still may be quite annoying.
</comment>

And it seems to me like <del>MC-4068</del> and <a href="https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-3416" title="Player location marker invisible on map (wrong Z-Order).                             <comment id="117722" author="vindicar" created="Tue, 5 Nov 2013 17:03:01 +0100"  >
I confirm that the bug is still present in 1.7.2

I have two clones of the same map in frames, third in my inventory (and two more in chests).
Whenever I place a third clone on a wall, third green marker fails to appear on the map I'm holding. If I drop my copy and pick it up, then all green markers are present but white marker is gone. If I remove map from the wall, white marker appears back and third green marker disappears as it should.
It only happens to the map I'm holding, maps on the walls function normally.
</comment>
                            <comment id="117704" author="terjesc" created="Tue, 5 Nov 2013 12:42:17 +0100"  >
Still present in 1.7.2, tested in multiplayer:
1. Made a map, activated it and zoomed out to maximum level.
2. Copied the map, placing the copy in an item frame.
3. Explored surrounding terrain. Both green and white arrow still visible.
4. Put the copy in hand into a chest. Did other things for a while.
5. Picked up the map from the chest. Now only the green arrow was visible.

Attempts to see the white arrow below the map failed.
Green arrow did not disappear when removing the map from the item frame, white arrow still hidden.
Problem persisted when replacing the map on the wall, and when shuffling the copies around.
Both map in hand and map on the wall are affected.
</comment>
                            <comment id="86607" author="destroyer2012" created="Mon, 8 Jul 2013 23:40:25 +0200"  >
I can confirm this is still present in 1.6.2. Player pointers disappear on cloned maps. Cloning maps sometimes makes the pointer appear below the map image.
</comment>
                            <comment id="81846" author="manioo8" created="Wed, 3 Jul 2013 22:41:28 +0200"  >
still happens in 1.6.1 [i'm using the biggest scale maps, 1 pix-chunk]
i have 2 maps hanging on frames(near me and in a village) and 2 maps being used by my friend and me. first when i held 2 maps in my hand (3rd with a friend and 4th in a village) and then placed one on a wall, i could see my marker, my friend's, and one in a distant village. i couldn't see the second green one. after putting my map into a chest and destroying/replacing item frame and map on a wall i could see 2 green markers and one white (friend's one)
but when i took 4th map from a chest i couldn't see my own.
there is clearly something wrong with updating markers, still in 1.6.1
</comment>

I can't just reset the server every time there is a map cursor bug.
</comment>

I'll add a picture attachment to this comment. This picture is named [12-12-04_15.05.59.png] and isn't part of the original bug description.
</comment>
                            <comment id="26550" author="roninvargaz" created="Tue, 4 Dec 2012 15:01:19 +0100"  >
Uhm I went back to my home to put up item frames again and again place copies of this map. When I did the white marker disappeared again and so I went to check if the bug would be the same as <del>MC-3146</del> (That is that the white marker would be visible if I went into uncharted territory, but only below the uncharted space) and it wasn't the same.

I went into uncharted territory and the uncharted territory became visible territory but I couldn't see the white marker at any time.

I will add a sixth picture attachment to better explain this comment. This picture is named [2012-12-04_14.50.52.png] and isn't part of the bug description.
</comment>

One-line fix included." class="issue-link" data-issue-key="MC-3416"><del>MC-3416</del> for now.
</comment>
                            <comment id="26548" author="roninvargaz" created="Tue, 4 Dec 2012 14:40:00 +0100"  >
I've been out trying to see if the bug is the same as <del>MC-3146</del>. I had put up 2 copies of a map at my home (on item frames) so I removed them from the wall and now I had 4 copies in my hand. When i looked at them the green markers where still there (the two that I just had removed). Anyway I went to place item frames with maps in them in the two villages that I had put item frames in before. Well now it worked accept the two green markers that where still present from the first two item frames. And after a short while the last green marker (4th) almost entirely disappeared) but now I could see the white marker all the time.

I will add a fifth picture to describe what I said in this comment. The comment picture is named [2012-12-04_14.22.25.png] and isn't part of the bug description.

You can see the green markers tip on the fourth location but that's it.
