[MC-1681] Clouds still pass through objects

                <project id="10400" key="MC">Minecraft: Java Edition</project>

I know that this issue has been around for a long time, but I would like to make a note of it in the official bug tracker.

Clouds still pass through solid objects in their path, instead of becoming transparent. I've heard that Mojang is reworking the rendering engine for Minecraft and it would be nice if they finally fixed this issue.

I've attached a gif I have seen around multiple sites, most likely coming from this: http://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/e7xol/this_is_how_clouds_should_work_gif_simulation/

I don't know if that method would work, but it would be nice to get someone at Mojang talking or thinking about this issue again.

The question is why clouds couldn't be inserted into the minecraft stratosphere where stars reside.
</comment>

Not saying there aren't solutions to this (I have couple simple/crude ones in mind), but the ideas so far thrown out here are not complete solutions.
</comment>
                            <comment id="44157" author="poopfish" created="Thu, 7 Feb 2013 05:44:05 +0100"  >
Agreed^ Optifine can currently do this client side, so maybe just add an option to raise clouds in the options?

I thought clouds were based on a texture, so you wouldn't you just need to add some kind of height map opacity layer to it? Like suggested in the attachment?
</comment>
                            <comment id="44156" author="alphablend" created="Thu, 7 Feb 2013 04:57:35 +0100"  >
The logic behind a fix would require that the movement of clouds not be static, but based around the concept that the area the clouds are moving into is known. As this can change over time, extra preparations have to be made every single time the clouds enter a building. This way, they can "hide" the parts that are entering into the building, while leaving the rest viewable. This, as Grum has said, would require an impact on performance for little gain in return.

A better solution is to raise the limit of clouds to Y coordinate 256.
</comment>
                            <comment id="43696" author="grum" created="Tue, 5 Feb 2013 09:33:16 +0100"  >
Has nothing to do with the 'render engine'. Has everything to do with wasting cpu power on logic that improves a visual effect slightly. That said it would still be nice, but it might not get priority soon.
</comment>

You are right, that's neither working as intended nor a feature request.
</comment>
                            <comment id="38454" author="poopfish" created="Sun, 20 Jan 2013 05:26:19 +0100"  >
Agreed, I was only hoping to make note of this issue. And a possible way to fix it. However Mojang decides to fix it is up to them, but it is a real issue nonetheless.

Also your quip about the modders being able to fix something in days that the core team can't fix in years is just scratching the surface that is the problem of Mojang and how it's choosing to "develop" Minecraft.
</comment>
                            <comment id="38453" author="alpharaven" created="Sun, 20 Jan 2013 05:15:29 +0100"  >
Hardly a feature. Just poor programming. I highly doubt clouds are meant to pass through solid walls and buildings. If so, whoever came up with this as a "wise" idea was a fool. Obviously shortsided on someone's part in never expecting skyscrapers or sky cities to be built. I am at odds to why modders can fix these issues in a matter of days, yet the core team can't fix something like this in years (back when Notch decided that this was a good idea and should be fixed).
</comment>
