The new banner markers persist but the old map-in-item-frame ones don't, so you get weird effects where sometimes there's a green dot overlaying your banner marker and sometimes there's not.
</comment>
                            <comment id="412164" author="jack_mckalling" created="Thu, 12 Oct 2017 15:14:35 +0200"  >
Still present in 1.12.2. Markers work fine until you logout and reload the world.

The map normally fills in a circular area around your current position. Any markers of cloned maps placed in item freames outside that area, will not show up upon relog. Markers only correctly show up again when visited.

Applies to both the Overworld as well as the End dimension.
</comment>

Green markers only show for chunks that have been loaded during the current gaming session.
</comment>

Maps do not show markers until chunk is loaded. Behaviour should mark any placed framed map on any other cloned map, anywhere.

Please note, my 'environment' is MacOS 10.12.5
</comment>

Suggestion to solve via feature, that is partially in game allready:
Add map landmarks, similar to one that present in Exploration map.
Possible way:

Map should be named on Anvil

Additional tag changes appearance from default one ( e.g. if tag is "Village", show village icon, etc.)

Add itemData, similar to one in exploration map.

As soon as map placed into Item frame, new instance added to set

That will allow to keep data in map without loading a chunk.
While removing map from the frame can be done only while chunk is loaded, i.e. should be updated on map anyway.
</comment>

I even signed up for a Realm hoping it would persist with the always-on Realm, but alas...
</comment>

Also happens with player arrows, and can (sometimes) be seen when you walk to the very edge. Evidence shows that these markers are layered below the map itself.
</comment>
