[BDS-1305] Players can't access server when "online-mode=true"

                <project id="11700" key="BDS">Bedrock Dedicated Server</project>

This was working find up until yesterday. I've made a server for my two girls, but none of us can use it anymore.

The server works just fine with if I set "online-mode=false", but I'd prefer it if the whitelist was working. And online mode needs to be on for that (which, of course, makes sense).

This is the message that is displayed in the game: "You need to authenticate to Microsoft services".
Other public servers are working just fine. Selecting "white-list=false" does not change anything.

Every 40-50 days or so the servers will say I need to authenticate to Microsoft services. I end up deleting then re installing the app. It used to work but now it says failed to connect to Microsoft account when I try to sign in. I know it works because it shows my gamer tag for a split second but quickly changes to Steve. Also it doesn’t even let me put in my email and password, it tries to do it automatically
</comment>

Never fear though! If this is still affecting you in the latest version (and is related to Bedrock Dedicated Server and not the Minecraft Bedrock game) all you have to do is comment and it will reopen.

                            <comment id="634995" author="ionicecko" created="Sun, 16 Feb 2020 10:34:17 +0100"  >
Thats awesome Bart, thanks for getting to the bottom of that. I meant to respond but have been trying to get through the historical tickets as much as I can (600 tickets down so far!).

There's a good chance BDS doesn't know the time is incorrect, it tries to authenticate with Mojang but the time difference causes secure comms to fail. A lot of apps have this problem but if it turns out its the same problem for the others I'll ask for if we can get it added to an FAQ of sorts.

Thanks for the thanks
</comment>
                            <comment id="634954" author="bartschipper" created="Sun, 16 Feb 2020 10:17:53 +0100"  >
I use docker image https://github.com/itzg/docker-minecraft-bedrock-server to run BDS on a virtual machine. I have solved the issue thanks to the suggestions implied in your comments above. Only after hours of staring at tcpdumps and changing dns settings in hosts files and resolv.conf files, @tested2 (Ryan Bearfield)'s comment: "It did work for like a minute then it stopped." made me think it could be a system time issue. And indeed, I noticed that the system time of my virtual machine was not synced with its host. After fixing this, the issue is resolved.

Apparently, the Minecraft app responds with the erroneous error message "You need to authenticate to Microsoft services" when the system time of the Minecraft server to which it connects is not set correctly. A better error message would be: "Server time out of sync. Please notify the server administrator." or more generic and less helpful: "Server incorrectly configured. Please notify the administrator." I suppose that this could/should be raised as an issue/improvement for the app, not for BDS.

@Pandorda85 (Ryan Valizan): I think you must provide more details of the setup of your server if you want help to solve your issue, which could have a different cause. Also, please report your findings back to help the community especially after solving the issue.

@IonicEcko (Ionic): Thank you for volunteering to drive the BDS issue board!
</comment>

At the time, other Ryan had resolved the issue by reinstalling Windows, as such this report wasn't valid.

If you're having the issue please provide as much information about your environment as possible. As there are thousands of BDS instances running with online-mode on its clear this issue isn't reliably reproducible so we need to include as much information as possible.

I have BDS instances running on Windows 10, Windows Server 2019 and Ubuntu for testing and online-mode works for all 3 of them so at the moment it looks like this issue is environmental rather than a bug but I'm happy to keep working with you to prove otherwise.

Edit: @Ryan B could you please try using a hard coded DNS such as Google DNS or Cloudflare (on both server and client). Also, if your server is publicly accessible I would be keen to try connecting to see if my account is affected if I try to connect.

                            <comment id="632132" author="tested2" created="Mon, 10 Feb 2020 22:31:17 +0100"  >
It did work for like a minute then it stopped. It had to be something specific on that windows install as It was still bridging the connection to the vm. I tried everything I could think of: I placed the ip in the dmz, I turned off the windows firewall, I manually set different dns servers. Im still not sure what the issue was as after the clean install of windows everything is working.
</comment>
                            <comment id="631999" author="bartschipper" created="Mon, 10 Feb 2020 14:52:28 +0100"  >
I still have this issue.

From the comments I understand that it is likely to be environment specific, please provide me some pointers to hunt down the cause. @IonicEcko suggests to look at DNS and network filtering and implies that using local IP-addresses "(ie 192. or 172. or 10.)" may have impact. Can you explain how?

Also, @tested2 mentioned running it in a virtualbox ubuntu vm earlier. Does this still work for him?

I run https://github.com/itzg/docker-minecraft-bedrock-server
</comment>

                            <comment id="631754" author="tested2" created="Mon, 10 Feb 2020 02:42:41 +0100"  >
I've done some more messing around and it seems to be specific to this machine as I was able to use my laptop as a server/client fine. I was also able to connect as a client from this machine as well which is weird. Next step I guess is to do a clean os install on this machine see if that helps if not its likely down to the network adapter/driver issue I would guess. Also to answer IonicEcko questions I'm on a very simple network no dns blackholes or filtering.
</comment>
                            <comment id="631698" author="ionicecko" created="Mon, 10 Feb 2020 00:56:54 +0100"  >
Thats unfortunate

Do you have any DNS blackholes (Pi-Hole/Technitium/OpnSense) on your network or advanced network filtering (IDS/IPS) etc?

I'm still working on the assumption that your issue is environment specific and given you've tried different OS's the main remaining option is network/ISP. Given there are thousands of BDS instances running with online mode on across the world I'm hesitant to accept this one as a bug and just wait for a fix. That's not to say it isn't, I'm not a dev and can't be sure, your environment might be triggering a very specific bug, but more investigation is needed.

If we can't identify what on your network could be causing it, I can stand up an instance on my box and see if we can replicate the problem again.
</comment>

It can't be a widespread fault given the number of dedicated servers out there that are working so this is likely to be an environment related issue.

Given you've tried both Windows and Linux now, that rules out the OS (mostly) so its probably worth taking a look at your network setup.
</comment>

I get the feeling the BDS section isn't visited often
</comment>

But there's an issue with the form, I couldn't enter the real version number because "this version does not exist".
</comment>

Are you able to provide more details about your set up? Are you running Bedrock Dedicated Server on the same device you're trying to play Minecraft on or is it seperate? Is the server on the same network as the clients or is it external (such as on a hosted VPS).

I have numerous servers running with Online-mode=true so it can't be an issue with Online mode and it might help the devs if we can work out what is different between your setup and many others.
