 Description

Description revised as of 0.15.90.2 rplatham:
When picking up items, the game does not seem to check to see if the stack should be split so that some of it stays on the ground because picking up all of it would overfill the player's inventory.

Example to Reproduce

  1. Fill all slots of your inventory and include two stacks of the same item (for this example, we'll use two full stacks (64) of coal)
  2. Place some more coal (say 16) in a chest nearby.
  3. Drop one full stack of coal from your inventory on the ground.
  4. Go get the 16 coal from the chest.
  5. Now pick up the full stack of coal from the ground.
  6. Observe that you now have two full stacks of coal in your inventory and there is no coal on the ground.

I expected that the full stack of coal on the ground would become a stack of 16 coal on the ground since your inventory could only hold 48 more coal.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Old Description

  • Add a full stack of some items to a chest
  • Add a non-full stack of the same item to your inventory
  • Fill all other slots of your inventory with anything else
  • Open the chest (Screenshot 1)
  • Long-click the item stack in the chest and transfer all of it to your inventory (Screenshot 2)

It works and nothing remains in the chest.
A stack of the remaining items is now stored in an invisible slot of your inventory. (Screenshot 3)

It isn't accessible directly, but if you try to send more items of the same type to your inventory from a chest they will stack on it (Visually they disappear but in fact they stack there, the problem doesn't happens when you send the item from a crafting table output, only from a chest)

If the item type is a combustible or something that can be burnt, the "invisible" stack is still available in the furnace UI.

It's not the only case where it happens but it's the easiest to reproduce.
In the screens I managed to make all the wood disappear from my inventory but that wasn't voluntary and I don't know exactly how, the inventory is sometimes a little strange when there are some invisible stacks around... (Screenshot 4)

Other way to reproduce by kaleb418:

1. Fill inventory up with random items.
2. Say, for instance, you have a stack of coal in your inventory. Throw out the stack of coal onto the ground.
3. Get another stack of coal in your inventory. Place down a chest. Make sure your inventory is still full, with one stack of coal in your inventory and one stack on the ground.
4. Change game mode to survival.
5. Put some coal in the chest, but still keep some in your inventory so there are no empty slots.
6. Pick up the coal on the ground. It will all go into your inventory, and the remainder of the coal that doesn't go into the visible slot will seemingly disappear.

Reconfirmed on Samsung Galaxy S6 (SM-G920W8), Android 6.0.1 MCPE 0.15.90.2. I'm updating the description since moving items between inventory/chest works, but picking up items off the ground does not.

Comment by Azelef [ 10/Aug/16 ]

Confirmed in 0.15.4, please reopen.

Comment by AMAN4700 [ 08/Aug/16 ]

Please respond and add the current version if you can reproduce this issue.

Comment by [Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay Wells) [ 26/May/16 ]

kaleb418 Agreed, following your steps above, you can collect more than your inventory will allow. One small difference is that I could not retrieve the excess items by dying, it seems they were lost in the 'invisible inventory slots'

Comment by Tybraius [ 26/May/16 ]

@Kaleb The bug still exists in 0.14.3 in the way that you and I described

Comment by kaleb418 [ 26/May/16 ]

Does this issue still affect 0.14.3? If so, please respond.

Comment by Tybraius [ 29/Mar/16 ]

I've added a video going through Kaleb's steps to reproduce the bug. You can see at the beginning that I drop a 64 stack of cobblestone onto the ground and replace my final inventory slot with 16 cobblestone. Collecting the previously dropped full stack fills my inventory, and the extra cobblestone disappears.

Comment by kaleb418 [ 29/Mar/16 ]

I can confirm that this still affects 0.14.0, but a little differently:

I know that was kinda a complicated answer, feel free to ask questions to clarify a step.

Comment by Alawnely [ 29/Mar/16 ]

It's because of lacking of inventory space but still needed to be fixed.

Comment by Jay rogers [ 19/Mar/16 ]

I haven't seen this since 0.14, has anyone else?

Comment by gatharian [ 08/Mar/16 ]

Reopening since this issue may affect 0.14.0 from MCPE-13903

Comment by [Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay Wells) [ 28/Feb/16 ]

No, in survival still. But.. It hasn't happened since though as far as I'm aware, and I've tested it by breaking full chests with a full inventory and haven't picked up anything extra, so I think it is fixed now.

I'll report back if it changes.

Comment by AMAN4700 [ 28/Feb/16 ]

Mega, were you in creative when picking up the items?

Comment by Clay Cummins [ 25/Feb/16 ]

Can someone tell me what this bug report is supposed to mean?

Comment by Clay Cummins [ 25/Feb/16 ]

This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Comment by [Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay Wells) [ 22/Feb/16 ]

Affects 0.14.0 Windows 10 Edition
I just 'picked up' a load of logs when my inventory was full. (Possibly because of items in the invisible inventory from before 0.14.0, but I'm not 100%) Either way, it's still an issue.

Comment by Robert Highfill [ 12/Feb/16 ]

I have noticed that there appears to be a limit of 7 invisible slots.

A work around I've used in the last few versions (up to 0.13.2) to get those items to my regular inventory without crafting them is to first empty my inventory into a chest. Then standing about 3 blocks away from an anvil, I place the stacks of two of those normally invisible slots into the slots in the anvil and exit the anvil gui. Those two stacks are dropped on the ground. I then repeat this until the stacks in the invisible slots are all on the ground and then pick them up again.

Comment by Thomas Clark-Phelps [ 08/Feb/16 ]

Still happening in 0.13.2.
Also I have noticed the same as other people. If you break a chest with that item it happens. And upon dying It will come back even though all inventory slots were filled with other things. Also I noticed you can still craft with those items.

Comment by [Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay Wells) [ 26/Jan/16 ]

I just tested overloading my inventory in 0.14.0 build 1, and I could not pick up any more items than my inventory would allow. Hopefully this will be confirmed as fixed from now on!

Comment by [Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay Wells) [ 07/Jan/16 ]

twsteever When you die the items drop again, but I havent tested this extensively to see if they all return. I suggest using up your XP first of course!

Comment by Todd Steever [ 07/Jan/16 ]

I too just experienced this issue. Had (What I assumed to be enough space) to collect the diamonds I had been mining. I had less than a stack in my inventory. I through out my useless blocks to make room for my recently found diamonds. I collected them and did see them disappear. When I went to put them in a chest...gone! I had about 20 diamonds disappear!

Am I correct in understanding, there is no way to recover these as they are not "invisible"?

This is the 3rd time I have been burned by this bug. Previously I had encountered it and chalked it up to inexperienced miner. This time I made sure I had ample empty slots. Very frustrating.

Comment by [Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay Wells) [ 04/Jan/16 ]

Just an update - Although this was marked as resolved in a future update, this is still happening in 0.13.1 and is extremely frustrating. (The most common occurrence is when a chest gets broken and you gather up too many items.)

Comment by rplatham [ 04/Dec/15 ]

Sealbudsman has it almost correct. It's fixed in a future release, but there's no guarantee that we will get the fix in the next release. For example (and I'm completely making up these version numbers, it's just for a hypothetical example, I have no inside info), it could be fixed for 0.13.1 or 0.13.4, 0.14 or 1.0 or some other future release.

Comment by Sealbudsman [ 01/Dec/15 ]

It's nothing to be concerned about, it means they fixed it, and when they release the next version (future release), we'll have the fix.

Comment by Kevin Perkins [ 01/Dec/15 ]

I saw that this issue has been marked as resolved, fixed in a future release. Given that there are now reports of items being lost (as opposed to just being hidden) I find this very concerning. Can someone explain what this change in status means?

Comment by April Denton [ 28/Nov/15 ]

Samsung Tab 4 Android 4.4.2 MCPE 0.13, truly disappearing for me. Had empty slots, but diamonds, emeralds, lapis and redstone dissapeared. Tried suicide and retreived things I didn't even know I had, wood planks. Still no diamonds, emeralds or lapis though, and I had double checked that I had picked them up and I had.

Comment by T105 [ 24/Nov/15 ]

Confirmed in 0.12 and 0.13 on my TCL 4035X, Android 4.4.2

Comment by rplatham [ 23/Nov/15 ]

kjperkin Unfortunately, I've no information on how the inventory items are stored in the game. I investigated briefly, but didn't get into the NBT format details. The developers are aware of this bug and if it was memory corrupting, I'm sure it would be higher on the list to be fixed.

Comment by Kevin Perkins [ 22/Nov/15 ]

This happens to me all the time in 0.12.3 on my HTC Nexus 9, Android 5.1.1. rplatham do you know if these invisible stacks can corrupt memory? From what I've seen when examining my level, the inventory is stored using NBT format and the invisible stacks look just like any of the others (no sign of corruption).

d4n13, I've been able to get at stuff using the anvil in 0.12.3. However, someone I know has had issues as of 0.13 where picked-up stuff would truly disappear (instead of "overflowing").

Comment by rplatham [ 26/Oct/15 ]

d4n13, The best way to avoid getting new invisible stacks of stuff is to ensure you always have at least one empty inventory slot. When you are picking up important stacks make sure you have enough slots.

Comment by Dan Bryant [ 21/Oct/15 ]

The invisible item was cracked cobblestone. I eventually decided to simply use the stack up and make some stairs and slab with it. My concern is that I'm about to start mining obsidian and making a railway. I would hate for my obsidian or rail to disappear.

Also... suicide will generally come with a pretty high loss of XP, so I was hoping to avoid that.

I was hoping that long pressing a blank hotbar or something would release the hidden item.

Comment by rplatham [ 21/Oct/15 ]

Dan, what is the material? Also, you could put all your items and armor in a chest then kill yourself. The invisible items will drop but some may disappear as is normal for dropping items when you die.

Comment by rplatham [ 21/Oct/15 ]

Adding the "uber description" so we have everything in one place...

Picking up stacks of items can overfill your inventory.
How to reproduce: fill all your inventory slots including an incomplete stack of something (we’ll use 40 cobblestone as an example). Try to add another amount of that something (30 cobblestone) from a chest by long press, or picking up as a stack item off the ground. The key is that the amount added must overflow the max stack size (64 for most things, 16 for eggs, etc.). What I expected: the stack being added should split so your inventory stack is full (64 stack of cobblestone) and the remainder (6 stack of cobblestone) stays in the chest or on the ground. What happens every time I do this: your inventory stack is correct but the remainder is not left in the chest or dropped on the ground. Some users are reporting that they are getting stacks greater than 64 when they do this, I could not reproduce this. Below, I show that the remainder stack is somewhere in your inventory, it’s not visible, but can be recovered. Note: this bug also occurs if you use a long press to move part of a stack from a chest and the portion you move overflows the stack you already have. This bug does not occur when picking up single items or adding items from a chest by single tapping repeatedly. This bug does not occur when collecting stacks when the stack in your inventory is already full. [This bug could be causing other errors if many “invisible” stacks start overwriting other data.]

Specific Example (Russ confirmed all parts reproducible):

  1. Fill all inventory slots with random stuff including a stack of 40 cobblestone (and no other cobblestone), a pickaxe and at least 2 sticks (helpful later).
  2. Place that stack of cobblestone somewhere in your hotbar too.
  3. Move a stack of 30 cobblestone from a chest into your inventory by long press. I expected to see 64 cobblestone in hotbar and a stack of 6 cobblestone in the chest, instead I see 64 cobblestone in the hotbar slot and none in the chest. This is the bug, and the rest of the stuff below are side effects of having an “invisible stack of 6 cobblestone in your inventory”.
    1. If I place or drop those 64 cobblestone blocks in the world, the hotbar slot and associated inventory slot go empty and it appears I have no cobblestone in my inventory.
    2. If I then mine 1 more cobblestone, the hotbar item fills with 7 cobblestone but the inventory slot remains empty and I can pick up something else.
    3. If I replace the cobblestone in the hotbar with something else, the cobblestone goes invisible again until I have an empty hotbar slot and I collect more cobblestone.
    4. I can drop the cobblestone from the hotbar and pick it up and everything seems fine again (cobblestone is in the hotbar and inventory slot)
  4. Instead of, or after 3(1), if I check the crafting table/menu, I can make various stone items (stonecutter, sword, shovel, axe, etc. and crafting them will succeed until the invisible stone runs out) even though I can’t see any cobblestone in my inventor
Comment by Dan Bryant [ 19/Oct/15 ]

Anybody find a way to reveal the invisible inventory if it is NOT combustible? I've got a stack of building material that has gone invisible, and I can't build with it since I can't hold it to place.

Comment by rplatham [ 14/Oct/15 ]

Confirmed on Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 5.0.1 MCPE 0.12.2. There are several ways to cause this bug. You can also make a non-full invisible stack visible again by adding some of that stackable item to your inventory when you have at least one empty slot. For example, if you invisible stack is 6 eggs and you have an empty slot in your inventory, picking up 1 egg will show a stack of 7 eggs in your inventory.

Comment by Tae [ 13/Sep/15 ]

Confirmed in MCPE 0.12.1

Comment by AMAN4700 [ 13/Sep/15 ]

Thank you for responding.

Comment by Caleb [ 12/Sep/15 ]

(if you use cobblestone for demo) you can reveal the invisible slot by going to your furnace and placing all 64 cobblestone in there, then remove it right after. The invisible slot of (cobblestone) will show up but if you press E to go to your inventory the slot will go invisible again.

Comment by Caleb [ 12/Sep/15 ]

can confirm it's still happening in Windows 10 (v.012.1)

Well this is new somehow i manage to remove the invisible stack by placing the the items in the chest when i move to inventory the items will first go into the invisible slot

Comment by AMAN4700 [ 12/Sep/15 ]

Does this bug still appear in 0.12.1? If so please respond.
