From the 1.11.0.1 Beta Changelog:

"Lightning no longer has a downward area of effect when hitting blocks, so will no longer strike mobs sheltering underneath blocks"

I believe this fix will resolve this issue, though the changelog doesn't refer to it specifically.

Still affects 1.8.1.

(Edited because I was wrong.)
Lightning does not go through glass, slabs, or stairs, but it will damage any mob or player within 3 blocks (including diagonally and vertically) of the place where it hits.

To protect a player or mob from lightning, the 7 x 7 area around it must have a ceiling at least 3 blocks above it. For players and 2-tall mobs, this means at least 3 blocks above its head, not the block it is standing in. The "ceiling" does not have to be flat; the individual blocks composing it could be at any height as long as they are at least 3 blocks above.

Note that this bug means a player or mob within a low cave just below the surface can be struck by lighting despite not being exposed to the sky at all.

I think it's worth noting that the lightning does not go through the ceiling (it does hits the block with sky access), and what's happening is that the lightning splash effect can reach below the targeted block (within 3 blocks under where the lightning bolt hits). If that's supposed to happen then there is nothing wrong.

To do the test yourself, just simply use the following commands:

Hits the player: /summon lightning_bolt ~ ~+4 ~
Doesn't hit the player: /summon lightning_bolt ~ ~+5 ~

I am on Bedrock v1.2.13 and can say that this seems to still be an issue as of May2018. I have trading hall and iron farm with a bunch of villagers lined up in 1x1 cells. They all have glass over them and the walkway in front has half slabs of cobble above. BUT I came in to find that 4 sequentially in line villagers in their 1x1 cells had been turned into witches. The only way I can think this happened is that lightning came through the ceiling of slabs or glass+slabs and struck them.

Would just like to note that this has occurred for me as well. It does not seem to matter what block type it is. I have been struck through my ceilings in areas of glass, planks, cobblestone and tree trunks. iOS 10.2.1 latest available game release at time of writing.

Note that this isn't WAI. Lightning bolts are supposed to strike only blocks that can see the sky.

Reopening. It affects 0.16.2.

Does this bug still appear in 0.13.1? If so please respond.

Comment by PanchamBro [ 12/Aug/15 ]

It works, but it's not suppose to hit me though the ceiling.

Comment by Sammy Garza [ 12/Aug/15 ]

Works as intended
