 Description

General description of the bug: Feeding dogs when they are hurt seems to be checked against the wolf max health (10 points instead of 20) making it impossible to heal a dog to full 20 point health, impossible to breed a dog that has been hurt, and possible to hurt a dog by feeding it (i.e. feed it at when at 19/20 and health is reduced to 10/20). The dog's tail position seems to be working fine in that it reflects the correct health between 1 and 10 health points of a 20 point maximum).

Original Report:
When I attempt to feed some of my dogs, either by pressing and holding on them, or by using the "feed" button, they are not affected but the food is consumed.

What I mean is: their tails do not move up (if they are down) and they do not ever get hearts. The food, however, disapears from my inventory.

For some reason, this doesn't affect all of my dogs. Some of them I can feed and it will both heal them and (if I use enough food) cause them to breed. Other dogs consume the food, but are not affected by it in any way. There is no obvious reason why some are affected and others not. I have tried with dogs who have had their collars dyed and dogs who have not and it doesn't seem to be a deciding factor.

I have also tried with different types of food and, again, it doesn't seem to be a factor in this bug.

This seems to be a duplicate of MCPE-8485, which the reporter has marked as resolved, but it isn't.

I am in the latest and my wolf tails were down because they are hurt but then something happened and now they are up again like they aren't and yet they are whining. I can't tell whose hurt and whose not now.. I would post a picture but I it wouldn't help XD

Edit: to add that they revert when you feed them so you can see the difference. thankful

In PE you tap and hold with meat in your hand. In PC you right click with any meat in your hand.

How do I feed my dog in mine craft

Comment by Joseph McGraw [ 25/Aug/15 ]

This is the same in both creative and survival modes

I accidentally hit my dog and no matter how much I feed it, I can't heal it... I have tried raw and cooked meat...

I have some further information regarding this - it doesn't appear to be just damaged dogs that are affected. I managed to tame two wolves and, whilst being very careful not to let them take any damage, I was able to breed them a few times.

The puppies, however, when they grow up are also affected by this - in that they, while they consume food, it has no affect on them. They also seem to have white collars, which I suppose is incorrect, but hardly a significant problem since we can now dye the collars.

Russell, in Pocket Edition, bare-handed damage is equal to 2 health points (1 full heart on the health meter).

I'll look into tail positions later. Hopefully they are working, but limited to the 1 to 5 heart range from the bug observed above.

Tail positions are accurate for the range that can currently be achieved (0-50% of the Dog's health) since this bug means healing above 50% is not possible.

I am investigating... There are two problems, which may be related. First, I don't trust the tail position is showing the wolf's health properly. Second it seems feeding only returns a tamed wolf (dog) to the maximum untamed wolf health.

For brevity, dog = "tamed wolf"

Tests tried in creative flat:
#1 Wolf Health Baseline Test
Spawn adult wolf
Punch with bone 5x (1 heart damage per punch x5)
Result: wolf dies on 5th punch
Conclusion: As expected, wolf has 5 health

#2 Dog Health Baseline Test
Spawn adult wolf
Tame it (it will also sit, that's a bug for another day)
Punch with bone 10x
Result: dog dies on 10th punch
Conclusion: Dog (tamed wolf) has 10 health

#4 Dog Health if fed after hurt
Spawn adult wolf
Tame it (it will also sit, that's a bug for another day)
Punch with bone x1
Feed it 1 raw beef (presumably restores health back to 10 heart max)
Punch with bone 5x
Result: dog dies on 5th punch! This is a bug, should have taken 10 punches
Conclusion: Dog health reduced to wolf maximum by feeding when health is not dog max _or raw beef hurts dogs

#4 Does Raw Beef heal dogs!?
Spawn adult wolf in a 2 deep hole (keeps it from running away on this test!)
Tame it (it will also sit, that's a bug for another day)
Punch with raw beef x9 (down to 1 heart health)
Feed 1 raw beef (presumes back up some health)
Punch with raw beef x1
Feed 1 raw beef
Repeat the above 2 steps more than 10 times
Result: dog does not die
Conclusion: Dog health is restored at least as much as a punch by feeding it raw beef.

#5 Dog Health max feeding health after hurt
Spawn adult wolf
Tame it (it will also sit, that's a bug for another day)
Punch 9x (presumes down to 1 heart health)
Feed it lots and lots of raw beef (presumes back to max health)
Punch 5x
Result: dog dies on 5th punch
Conclusion: Dog health is restored by feeding, but cannot be restored above 5 hearts (wolf maximum?) This is a bug.

#6 Dog Health if fed at max health
Spawn adult wolf
Tame it (it will also sit, that's a bug for another day)
Feed it 1 raw beef (enters breeding, should not affect health)
Punch 10x
Result: dog dies on 10th punch
Conclusion: Dog health not reduced by entering breeding when health is already max.

#7 Breeding hurt dogs test
Spawn adult wolf
Tame it (it will also sit, that's a bug for another day)
Punch 9x (presumes down to 1 heart health)
Feed it lots and lots of raw beef (presumes back to max health)
Result: dog never enters breeding mode because it is never at its max health
Conclusion: This max health bug is the cause of the bug that once hurt, dogs cannot be bred

Are we sure on the "once damaged" thing?

Comment by Katten [ 06/Jun/15 ]

Confirmed for 0.11.1 on iPhone 6 plus (iOS 8.3).

Comment by Ethan Cha [ 06/Jun/15 ]

This is also still present in 0.11.1. Issue also confirmed in iOS

Comment by Namitha Kumar [ 04/Jun/15 ]

This is still present in 0.11.0 alpha.

Comment by Paul Hunnisett [ 03/Jun/15 ]

I'm still having this issue on build 14 single player as well.

Comment by Namitha Kumar [ 03/Jun/15 ]

This happens on singleplayer rplatham on build 14.

Comment by rplatham [ 03/Jun/15 ]

Confirmed that this affects single player MCPE 0.11 build 14. Namitha, can you comment on whether you are in single player or multiplayer?

Comment by Namitha Kumar [ 29/May/15 ]

Ya still there in build 14. The dogs never show hearts after feeding them but the food is consumed.
