Confirmed on Samsung Galaxy S4 android 4.4.2 creative & survival modes. Although, the description could be a lot clearer to help us debug, and it might not be a bug at all.

The 68KB image shows the red sand falling on player right before suffocation would start and the 50KB image shows the players view while suffocated - the red sand appears plain in color.

How to reproduce this:
Get some red sand and suffocate yourself in it. (i.e stand somewhere that you can drop two blocks of red sand on top of yourself). When you are covered in sand, it appears to be plain colored sand, not red sand as I would expect.

This may not be a bug. When suffocating, there is no light around you so the lighting engine may desaturate colors such that red sand appears grey (which is the same as plain sand in the dark too).

I don't understand this issue.
