 Description

Hi. I'm having the issues with MPE on my Nexus S running Android 4.1.1 "Jelly Bean" since 0.3.3 version. Game and phone works fine, but after I move a little around the map (and just in-game, not in the menu), the phone freezes completely and just battery pull resolves the problem. It works the same every time I run Minecraft PE it turns the same. I hoped 0.4.0 fix the issue but it didn't. For now the game is unplayable for me and (I assume) the rest of people using Android 4.1.

I would like to say that I am also experiencing lag and device freezing while running the game, and my system is different from this person's.

Comment by Johan Bernhardsson [ 22/Jan/14 ]

Does it work now with the latest version?

I have samsung galaxy s i9000 and i can confirm that it happened to me when i was on jellybean 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 (custom roms). It was ok on ICS 4.0.4. The google fixed it when they released android 4.4 for phones with low ram. At jellybean i got system lag that i could just reset my phone (2 mins of gameplay on fancy graphics and far render dist.). Now i'm on UNOFFICIAL Cyanogenmod 11 (android 4.4) and i played with fancy graphics and long render distance for longer than 5 mins, i could build a platform on which i spawned a lot of chickens. There was a lot of minecraft lags, but system didn't lagged. I was able to quit the game through it menu.

I have a similiar problem where the game freezes when you begin to move. HTC Amaze 4G Android 4.3 CynogenMod 10.2

Freeze on galaxy S Advance (gt-i9070p with dualcore processor and 700mo Ram) on Android 4.1.2 but much less on gingerbread 2.3.6...

Comment by Panda [ 10/Apr/13 ]

I've had this problem for quite a while. However it seems to trigger when there is too many things/block/something in the world you open. However when you open a new map there are no problems. (Though the nyan seed did freeze after a while.

Comment by Rafał [ 10/Apr/13 ]

Sadly, but still I'm getting device freeze on my stock Jelly Bean (4.1.2) Nexus S, even though I turned off fancy graphics, I didn't try lower graphics quality setting though. Running latest version of MPE (Alpha 0.6.1).

Comment by Tails [ 10/Apr/13 ]

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

Comment by Stephane Peters [ 14/Feb/13 ]

Maybe related, please look at MCPE-1072 - "Screen Flicker's All The Time" ;
I must check if the flicker also appears after 6 minutes like your freeze.
With Android 4.2.1 / Cyanogenmod 10.0

Comment by Jordi Schaap [ 30/Jan/13 ]

Comment by Jordi Schaap [ 30/Jan/13 ]

I have android 4.2.1 and i have the same problem i think it is because is don't have enough ram memory i have a samsung galaxy s i9000 with cyanogenmod 10.1 newest update

Comment by Edward [ 18/Jan/13 ]

I've notice I don't experience any freezes on survival mode. Only on casual mode does it freeze.

Comment by Klemen Jug [ 16/Jan/13 ]

Does anyone know how can I submit feature requests on Minecraft forums??

Comment by Johan Bernhardsson [ 14/Jan/13 ]

If this is because of low memory issues, I'm not sure if we as developers can do much about it. Could other people try to confirm this by like starting lots of apps?

Comment by Matt Davis [ 24/Dec/12 ]

The freezing appears to be less frequent if I clear all app cache, wipe cache partition, and in developer options don't allow background apps to run. Also using airplane mode while playing. Sprint 4G Samsung nexus s unrooted.

Comment by Edward [ 22/Dec/12 ]

My crashing has stopped after installing 'supercharger V6' which makes me think the crashing is due to the device running out of memory.

Comment by Edward [ 20/Dec/12 ]

Just commenting to say that I've been experiencing the phone freeze on the Nexus S. I'm using the low quality graphics and it seems to freeze when I'm looking at long distances. I've built a map that has a vantage point that has a waterfall next to it, always seems to freeze when looking to the distance or when adding blocks.

There was a second occurrence of the freezing on another map I created. I built a tall skyscraper and seemed to freeze when walking up the staircase (may have been due to large amounts of blocks within the building).

I have tried overclocking to the maximum I can get (1.2ghz) with no luck, and loaded Minecraft PE with recent apps closed first. Once freezes it always requires a battery pull. Hope to see a solution for this

Samsung Nexus S, Android 4.1.2, AOKP ROM

Edit - Forgot to add this is Minecraft PE V 0.5.0

Comment by Pierre-Yves [ 15/Dec/12 ]

It freezes faster with "Fancy Graphics", than in "Default mode" (when nothing's ticked).

Comment by Do [ 12/Dec/12 ]

Looks like the Nexus S is still having issues in 0.5.0, reopening.

Comment by Guy moreau [ 04/Dec/12 ]

I can confirm this still happens. Galaxy S (I9000M) using low quality graphics. When it freezes in unpredictable. Using CM10 Nightly.

Comment by Pierre-Yves [ 02/Dec/12 ]

Sorry, I was too quick to comment back, the freeze bug is still there

Comment by Pierre-Yves [ 17/Nov/12 ]

Minecraft seems to be working fine after updating to 0.5. Thanks for fixing it (I have also updated CM10 since the bug occured).

Comment by Ian James Simpson [ 15/Nov/12 ]

Thank you all for your hard work and regular updates.

Comment by Rafał [ 15/Nov/12 ]

Indeed fast graphics solves the problem, still I hope this might be repaired somehow in next version or subversion like 0.5.1. What is weird this issue seem to occur on the same devices that had a texture flicker issue on Android 2.3, which are Google Nexus S and Samsung Galaxy S (noticed by Pierre-Yves a few posts above; both having Hummingbird SoC and PowerVR SGX540) which run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (doesn't matter stock (Nexus S) or custom ROM (both devices)).

Comment by Johan Bernhardsson [ 15/Nov/12 ]

We will not have time to research this more, has something to do with drawing but we don't currently know what. A workaround for now is to use "Lower graphics quality" which seems to work.

Comment by Johan Bernhardsson [ 15/Nov/12 ]

We are trying to get this is fixed before 0.5.0 but it may be delayed until a later version.

Comment by Endre fjermestad [ 09/Nov/12 ]

its not fixed

Comment by Johan Bernhardsson [ 08/Nov/12 ]

No, we still have a little bit of time left for the android version but right now I don't know. Starting to wonder if there is an actual bug in Android 4.1.2. Will look more into it next week, promise.

Comment by Ian James Simpson [ 07/Nov/12 ]

Have you been able to figure anything out on this one, Johan?

Comment by Pierre-Yves [ 28/Oct/12 ]

Same issue here, the game freezes after 5 to 7 minutes while moving around worlds. No solution except a battery pull. Running Minecraft PE on a Galaxy S with Cyanogenmod 10 28 oct nightly (Android 4.1.2). Worked perfectly on previous CM9/Android 4.0.4 nightlies.

Comment by Johan Bernhardsson [ 08/Oct/12 ]

I have now been able to reproduce this issue on this device. Very strange behavior, I can still access the device but the touch screen and buttons doesn't respond. Will try more tomorrow.

Comment by Johan Bernhardsson [ 08/Oct/12 ]

OK, I'll do some more testing on this. Perhaps I should just put the phone down and run it for a few hours and see what happens.

Comment by Ian James Simpson [ 05/Oct/12 ]

Day/night cycle works fine. It freezes both while moving and being still.

Comment by Rafał [ 05/Oct/12 ]

OK I didn't answer before cause I totally forgot about this, but let me try to tell.

I just turned on Minecraft PE, loaded one map and it worked weirdly fine. I turned MPE off, get it back on, loaded the map again, flied around and then it freezed. Seems this is kind of random, but happens in multiple Nexus S phones.

PS: Weird thing, this time after freeze, I put the phone and didn't touch it - phone rebooted. I've tried once again, this time no reboot, just eternal freeze. I checked logcat, phone keeps working in background, I'll attach logcat here maybe you'll find out something with it. If you ask me it's connected with chunk loading as this happens usually when moving around.

Comment by Johan Bernhardsson [ 05/Oct/12 ]

Hum, six to seven minutes. If you just stand still, does it still happen or is it when you run around? Also, is it like always turning to night or something when it happens?

Comment by Ian James Simpson [ 05/Oct/12 ]

Okay. I have tried running on normal graphics. I have also tried the nyan seed, no luck with either. It ran for about six or seven minutes before freezing. I have also attempted uninstalling and reinstalling MC. Anything else you can think of, I am willing to try.

Comment by Johan Bernhardsson [ 04/Oct/12 ]

Yeah, I thought as much about the SD card. I guess it still could be something with the internal memory but I don't know. I tried running the "nyan" seed for about 15 min and it worked as it should. One thing that you can check is if you have changed options to higher graphics settings. It's a bit problematic when I can't get a proper test case. Could you please confirm that this happens on the "nyan" seed (and in survival) for you?

Comment by Ian James Simpson [ 27/Sep/12 ]

The Nexus S does not have an SD card. As far as apps go, I've got Task Killer so the only apps that run while I am playing are the apps that come on the device. I don't understand how to recreate the bug. I only know that it does it after running Minecraft for few minutes.

Comment by Johan Bernhardsson [ 26/Sep/12 ]

I have now tried this on a freshly installed Nexus S and I'm not able to reproduce this problem. If any of you have this problem, could you try to describe it in a bit more detail (like what other apps you are running) how everything is working with the sd-card and so on?

Comment by Johan Bernhardsson [ 20/Sep/12 ]

OK, going to fix a phone and then we'll try it out. I doubt this is connected directly to jellybean since it works on the Galaxy Nexus but I hope we can find out

Comment by Ian James Simpson [ 19/Sep/12 ]

I am running no mods and Iam having the same problem since installing the newest Android OS. I would like this fixed in the next update if possible. I have had two previous worlds erased and I am anxious to get to work on a new mansion. But as the other person stated, the game is unplayable at this point.

Comment by claudio [ 11/Sep/12 ]

I'm also having this issue since 0.33 release on a galaxy s running a custom Rom of jelly bean 4.1.1. Version 0.32 worked fine even on jelly bean .other 3d game such as dead trigger works fine on my phone.please try to fix this crash because it's very annoying because i can't play but I understand that is not your fault but maybe rom incompatibilty.thanks for your attention and good work

Comment by Johan Bernhardsson [ 10/Sep/12 ]

This is weird, I'm running 4.1.1 and it runs great (although I'm using a Galaxy Nexus). Are you running some sort of custom ROM or something?

Does other 3D games work as they should?
