Try moving the app from your sdcard to your internal storage. This worked for me. Also don't forget to backup your worlds.

Comment by Michel Sijmons [ 16/Jul/17 ]

My son had the same problem with the app permissions not being asked / granted on a Nvidia Shield K1 tablet, causing the app to crash to the android launcher/menu after pressing the "play" button (translated from dutch "Spelen").
After manually granting the app permissions MCPE launches without issues.

With minecraft pe app, the permissions where not allowed for the minecraft app to access contacts and storage and telephone - Howard Thornley #comment-390667

Using MCPE 1.1.3
Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

I am having this same issue, but here's a little more info. I have two profiles on this tablet: the main admin profile, and a restricted account. I share MCPE from the main account to the restricted account.

I was having this issue on BOTH of the accounts but after reading this thread I made some changes. On the admin profile, I moved the app to internal storage but the issue persisted. I gave the app permissions to storage and the issue persisted. Then, in the game settings, I changed file storage location to application and suddenly everything worked fine for admin profile!

Yay! So then I went to make the same changes to the restricted profile BUT when I change the file storage location to Application it won't stick. Every time I exit the game it changes back to External and the issue persists. I feel as though the problem would be fixed if I could just set the file storage location to Application but it won't let me. This is a bummer because this is mainly a kids tablet and the restricted profile is really the one that gets used.

So yeah, I thought the additional info might help and also the fact that I'm not using an NVIDIA tablet and that I'm using a restricted profile might shed some light. Please fix it MOJANG.

Howard had a factory reset, which automatically moved the app to internal storage.

Comment by Toufic Batache [ 09/Jul/17 ]

I can confirm that this bug also affects 1.1.3.52. Also, the changelog appears everytime along with the settings resetting. I think this bug is caused by the Android M (Android N too) adopted storage (https://nelenkov.blogspot.com/2015/06/decrypting-android-m-adopted-storage.html). Could you guys please post your Android version? Thanks

Comment by Mustafa Alperen SEKİ [ 07/Jul/17 ]

Can confirm that SD Card is the issue. Moved app back to internal and it works now. Also effects 1.1.3.

Comment by Howard Thornley [ 24/Jun/17 ]

Ok, a update from me!

I was starting to have other issues with apps on my nvidia shield tv so decided to do a factory reset in the end.

On loading each app I checked permissions and settings of the app. With minecraft pe app, the permissions where not allowed for the minecraft app to access contacts and storage and telephone. Interesting, I changed settings, clear cache and clear data. Loaded minecraft....

Minecraft pe is working fine. Saving settings, quick bar working as expected, loading 3rd skins worked first time. We held our breath when the 1.1.1 update came out, it was all fine. Which started causing issues for me since 1.0.5 release...

Soooooooooooooooooooo

Was it the factory reset, was it the minecraft pe permissions not being set by app, I can not give you the direct answer, but it 100% worked for me.

Side note: using the same aproach, my other apps are working as expected also...!!!

Howard

They should work on it cause the upcoming major update is gonna attract more But i highly doubt they will or it would have been done.

Comment by Toufic Batache [ 22/Jun/17 ]

The issue seems to come from the SD Card. Moving the app to internal fixes the problem. The devs should work on fixing that.

SD Card is the problem!

Comment by Toufic Batache [ 22/Jun/17 ]

I tried a full reinstall with no luck. I also tried to switch the storage to Application with also no luck because when I reopen Minecraft, it switches back to External

Comment by Toufic Batache [ 22/Jun/17 ]

This issue can be confirmed and experienced on my end also... I am using MCPE 1.1.1 with an HTC 10 running Android 7.0

Comment by Peter F Miller [ 11/Jun/17 ]

Not an option on my device unfortunately, on Android TV you can't move apps between internal storage and SD card.

This used to work properly without a workaround, so hopefully they can get find a proper fix for this.

Edit: I found there is actually a way to move apps to internal storage and it did fix the issue. A simple workaround would be to disable installing the app on external storage. That's just a simple change to the package manifest.

Comment by James Richardson [ 11/Jun/17 ]

I agree with Jacob works but does have bad lag going into the game for me. But still an interesting thing to note that it is. Hint to the dev team amiright,

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 10/Jun/17 ]

Ritvik lohani This did work to fix it, though considerably lowers speed and render distance...

Comment by Ritvick Lohani [ 10/Jun/17 ]

IIRC I think the problem started when I added the SD card to my phone

I have done many ROM changes and the problem was still there, until just now when I moved the app to internal shared memory from my SanDisk SD card.

It's a Moto g3 with linage os 14.1 Android nougat 7.1.2

Comment by Ritvick Lohani [ 10/Jun/17 ]

I switched app location from external sd to internal shared sd on my Android phone and the problem became fixed.

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 10/Jun/17 ]

Gregg Birchall this did not work, I'm glad this worked for you though. What device are you using?

Comment by Gregg Birchall [ 09/Jun/17 ]

I had the same problem until earlier today, I opened settings went into storage and deleted all resource packs. Don't know why or how it worked but it did. Hope it works for others with the same problem

Comment by My Name Is [ 07/Jun/17 ]

This has been happening on Kindle Fire tablets in our household. At first we thought it was just the profile name and skin, since that's the part most noticeable. However, after reading other comments here, it appears any settings we change are being reset each time you open Minecraft Pocket Edition. The current version from Amazon is 1.1.0.55. The devices affected are Kinde Fire 7 (2015) using Freetime. We tried the uninstall and reinstall with no success.

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 04/Jun/17 ]

I don't know if this is associated but sometimes the buttons on the home screen are black and the background is gray stripes.

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 04/Jun/17 ]

And also, try and vote for this so it gets noticed.

Comment by James Richardson [ 04/Jun/17 ]

they seem to not care cause they cant reproduce it. Thats what i am getting. I have walked this path before and they have done nothing to fix it.

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 04/Jun/17 ]

I have tried making a options.txt that did not help, I have also tried switching from application to external and that did not help. This have been going on since 0.16.x and I am on the verge of deleting Minecraft. And trust me it is hard to walk away from such a great game I have been playing since 2013 and own all platforms. But this glitch is so bad and time wasting when I have to reset my settings and I look like a noob on servers (which also delete...) Because I have to use a skin from a skin pack. I dont want to delete it. But if this is not fixed by 1.2 I will delete it...

Comment by James Richardson [ 04/Jun/17 ]

Louie I use External but it still doesn't have the option files. So what ever i can get to fix it im in.

Comment by Louie Lopez [ 04/Jun/17 ]

Mine saves my settings and I do have an options.txt file. Tested on both iOS and Android and it saves my settings on both. Solution: Use External not Application. And also it saves my settings even from 1.0.0+. I can send a link for the file on Android if you need it (1.1 options).

Comment by James Richardson [ 04/Jun/17 ]

I have to agree here I'm using a Nvidia Shield Tablet k1 and the options file isn't being made. Its really killing the game having to redo the settings every time one opens the app.

Comment by Howard Thornley [ 03/Jun/17 ]

Ok update, release of 1.1.0 is no different. Settings don't save, custom skin creates black figure. Keep you informed about the quickly links bar. Loving the different bed covers.

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 29/May/17 ]

This also happens on my kindle fire.

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 29/May/17 ]

Sorry for late response mega_spud... Changing the settings does not help. I used to be able to use the tool box for Minecraft pe and it would keep my settings but after 1.0.8 even it does not work...

Comment by Jeremy Poole [ 25/May/17 ]

I believe I am having a related issue. I wanted to try and override the render distance by changing the options.txt file. I do not even have the file in folder and only have the files the OP shows in their attachment.

Comment by Howard Thornley [ 20/May/17 ]

Ok, 1.0.9 has been released with settings still not saving.

Update on "file storage". Set as "application" new worlds can not be created. Message "can't be opened". When exiting the app the settings don't save and it changes back to external.

Happy to try alpha or beta versions or a debug version if that will help...

Comment by Howard Thornley [ 20/May/17 ]

This is my Nvidia Shield TV feedback in this situation...

MCPE 1.0.4 was perfect - changed settings would save, custom Steve skins loaded and saved. Since that version to current 1.0.8 the same thing is happening.

All settings will not save no matter how I exit the app.
But does save my Xbox user name and password.
I have to log into Xbox account every time
Custom skins load as an all black figure and not save.
Preloaded skins do work, but won't save on reload of app
Adding new worlds is fine
External server worlds do not save
The item bar on main screen starts to show the same item in more than one slot. There is no logic to this, or ways I could explain that it could be replicated. Clearing the item bar does seem to clear the issue for a period of time.

I was blaming permissions. But when I deleted the app and reloaded 1.0.4 it all worked fine as expectation skins saving item bar etc... The app auto updates over night to 1.0.8 and we are back to the same issues again.

I am happy to help and send what ever logs you need. I really want to buy the Fallout pack (massive fan of fallout) but not sure what will save after the app reloads.

The "file storage location" ( I will double check) but pretty sure made no difference.

Comment by [Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay Wells) [ 17/May/17 ]

In the storage settings, are you using External or Application?

Go to Settings > Profile > File Storage Location

Does choosing a different option help with this issue?

Please report back with your findings.

I have the same problem and I don't like it it's just frustrating

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 11/May/17 ]

How so I update this to newer versions. It is still affecting all versions beta and non beta

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 20/Apr/17 ]

Still! Affects the latest beta

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 20/Apr/17 ]

No I do not, David Lewis, it is getting to the point where MCPE is getting obsolete and am most likely gonna delete it, seeing as how I have had this problem for a while now and it still has not been answered...

Comment by David Lewis [ 20/Apr/17 ]

The same thing happens with my Kindle Fire, do you have any idea how to fix this?

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 17/Apr/17 ]

STILL happens in the latest beta. This has been dragging on...

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 26/Mar/17 ]

Still gliching in 1.0.6 beta

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 22/Mar/17 ]

Alright,so I left the beta and the options worked perfectly. And the file folder minecraftpe is now there. So I went back to the beta and this time the folder is still there but everytime I reenter the settings are reset. When I first go to the menu to replace them they are in the same place I left them, then they reset.

Comment by Jacob Wheatley [ 22/Mar/17 ]

I reinstalled/downloaded and isn't there supposed to be a settings folder

Comment by [Mojang] Mega_Spud (Jay Wells) [ 22/Mar/17 ]

Thank you for your report!
Have you tried a full reinstall of the game? Sometimes a clean install of the game will help with these kind of issues.

Please back up any data you wish to keep and uninstall then reinstall the game.

  1. Backup your MinecraftWorlds folder (if you want to save your worlds) (Device storage > games > com.mojang > minecraftWorlds)
  2. Uninstall MCPE
  3. Delete the com.mojang folder (Device storage > games > com.mojang)
  4. Reinstall MCPE
  5. Run MCPE and if it works restore your MinecraftWorlds folder
