The issue is that items disappear after not hitting the ground after some time. This issue is technically reported in MCPE-16628 already, so I'm marking this as a duplicate.

I also observed this with one important additional observation. The amount of time taken for the sand/Anvil/gravel to dissapear while falling is identical to the time taken for lit TNT to explode. I suspect that the two are linked.
(Also on iOS )
I've attached some images of a suitable sand cannon that can be used to show this bug (the sand never returns)

Illidicia also observed the following:

Falling sand despawns after four seconds, and so this can also be observed during its uninterrupted falls.

So I have marked this as a related issue to MCPE-12765
