I think the OP is trying to show how the gravel isn't breaking into an entity after placing a torch under it.

This is nothing new. A lot of people use torches to clear gravel, but it is also possible to place gravel or sand on top of a torch to "suspend" it. I've also noticed that falling gravel can pass through a wall-torch and still land on the ground. I don't see any priority for this behavior to be fixed; in fact, some really clever/fun traps work based on this mechanic.
