 Description

When provoked, Endermen teleport away as expected. Often, they make no attempt at either teleporting back to the player, or approaching the player to attack. Instead, they teleport away once again, appearing disinterested in the player. This was observed in earlier versions of Minecraft, however, at a much lower frequency.

As the player approaches, the enderman will move towards the player if "aggravated but interested" or teleport away or do their own thing if "aggravated or not aggravated but still disinterested."

Of course, if the player either catches up, or the enderman approaches the player, there is still a high chance that the enderman teleports away right when the attack is placed, dealing no damage to the mob. This behaviour now restarts, creating a very tiresome chase.

  • They may become disinterested when teleporting near or in an unrendered chunk (refer to MC-129 which occurs very often)
  • Testing done during the day and night, no rain or snow. Tested on flatlands, and desert/plain (biomes with smaller amounts of water).
  • As stated before, this behaviour is different compared to earlier Minecraft versions. This still occurred, but at a lower frequency, making an enderman battle interesting, as he teleported to all sides of the player, varying the battle with a teleportation away from the player. In this version, the enderman seems to often coward away from battle, and teleports away before the player can hit.

Endermen still behave strangely in 15w31a.

Confirmed for 1.8.8.

From MC-62863:
1. Endermen, after teleporting, path-find their way back to the space they were at before teleporting. (Noticed when an Enderman teleports, but teleports back into the same spot a second later.)
2. They stop getting angry at the player after losing sight.

Still in 1.8.

I can confirm for 14w31a. My "Poor Man's Enderman Farm" that I made won't work, since when the enderman take damage from the blocks in their heads, they teleport away and become non-aggro.

The issue still occurs on 1.7.10. Most of the times, the Enderman makes its first approach until the player hits it. Then, when teleporting, it keeps losing interest in the player or just teleports too far out of sight. The enderman is then often seen in an aggressive state with its mouth open, but doesn't try to approach the player.
This gets very annoying when attempting to gather ender pearls.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version 14w18a / Launcher version 1.3.11 or later? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

Is this ticket obsolete with the introduction of the new mob AI in the recent 14wXX snapshots ?
According to MC-47437 and MC-47697 the Endermen are even more dumb...

Yes, I am currently having this issue in one of my survival games. I will attack the enderman, but after he teleports away, he never comes back.

From what I've seen, if you attack them at night they almost work fine, but during the day time they do this sort of: look at them, they agro, then they teleport away when you try to damage them, and then keep teleporting away, turning passive each time. You have to some how corner them or 'attack with out looking at them' to kill them. At night, they seem to stick more when you agro them, but at times they still do this passive shift.

My query has been answered on the forums. It seems Fire Aspect swords repel Enderman, make them teleport and then they reverse to passive. OP may want to test and confirm ensuring they don't use a Fire Aspect sword to see if bug still exists for them.

Thanks.

Can confirm still happening as of 08/07/2013 in 1.6.1. Tested in survival on a desert biome generated ~ 1.5.

It would be good if Andrew Mancini or a mod could update the version on this.

Comment by SilverTail [ 25/Jun/13 ]

Still experiencing this in 1.5.2. When looked at and angered, the Enderman will rush the player, but after the player attacks once, will teleport away forever. This makes it difficult to kill an Enderman and harder still to attain Ender Pearls.

Still, seems unnatural.

They always teleport if you look at their upper legs, which is where they will be aggroed to you if you look there. If you look at their feet, they will not teleport.
