 Description

What I thought would happen:
The pumpkins going in to the chest via the hopper would stack with the pumpkins on the bottom row of the chest

What actually happened: A new stack of pumpkins was created at the top of the chest

Why does this work as intended? There is no comment here that says it. And everything else (shift-click, pick up, ...) stacks, so why not this?
Confirmed for 1.9.3-pre1 and pretty much all versions in between if anyone is interested.

To be clear, the issue is that hoppers do not replicate the behavior of shift+clicking stackable items in your inventory while viewing a chest with incomplete stacks of that same item.

Hoppers favor placing items in the earliest possible slot instead of the earliest slot with the same stackable item type when present.

This may be intended behavior.
