[MC-7555] Eating a cake takes precedence over blocking with a sword, regardless of whether or not you are hungry Created: 16/Jan/13  Updated: 23/Jun/17  Resolved: 26/Nov/13

Environment:

Windows 7, Java Platform SE 7 U7

Confirmation Status: Unconfirmed
Game Mode: Survival

 Description

What I expected:
That my sword would block while I was looking at cake.

What happened:
My sword made infinite swinging motions at the cake, but did not damage the cake.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Have sword selected in hand
2. Be close enough to cake while looking at it that the cake block is "highlighted"
3. Try blocking with sword

Additional Notes
Seems to occur in both survival and creative. Affects all swords.

No response in 4 months, assuming no longer an issue.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

I suppose the player should either eat a piece of the cake or block when right-clicking, not just swing at it. So yeah, it's kind of an issue.

The cake takes the focus regardless of wether you can eat.

Is the issue that the sword stops blocking when the focus moves to the cake or that it isn't possible to block in the first place when looking at the cake? The first issue does not exist in 1.6.1, while the second still does.

I'm not going to close it because I believe it is still an issue. I will have someone else check it, however.

What Oscar said.

Tip: Hold shift when you right-click to avoid interacting with objects like crafting tables and cakes.

This is because right-click block actions (such as opening a furnace/chest and eating a cake) override right-click held item actions (such as sword blocking). The only reason you notice this is because your hunger is full. You are still trying to eat the cake, just it won't let you eat with full hunger.
