 Description

While playing on the new snapshot in the nether, I broke a block above me and a lava started to flow downwards. The speed of which it fell was EXTREMELY fast, and it was almost, but a little slower, then water flowing.

Dinnerbone was only talking about the nether there, he said nothing about the end. I made a new ticket, please link as related. MC-100150.

Lava flows faster in the nether. This is an intentional change. Why did it change? Because we felt that it should.

If you still feel it's a bug that Lava flows faster in the End than in the Overworld, then please create a new ticket.

Comment by KingSupernova [ 27/Mar/16 ]

This seems to be partially fixed for lava in the end. It no longer flows as far or as fast it does in the nether, but it still flows faster than it does in the overworld.

Comment by KingSupernova [ 06/Mar/15 ]

I agree that lava flowing faster in the nether is intended, but why the End? That shouldn't happen.

Comment by vincent wayne collins [ 23/May/13 ]

yeah i KNOW i was on capslock i did it ON PURPOSE!!

IM NOT SAYING THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG OR STRANGE ABOUT IT IM SAYING ITS JUST NOT AS CONVENIENT AND TIME CONSUMING TO USE WATERAND TORCHES.

Comment by WolfieMario [ 23/May/13 ]

Torches are also easier, cheaper, and faster to make than redstone lamps, and cobblestone is the same when compared with netherbrick. That doesn't stop me from making redstone lamp-lit bases with netherbrick walls. I have a friend who uses lava for lighting and aesthetics (and in fact has used it like this in the End too). There's absolutely nothing wrong or strange about that.

Comment by vincent wayne collins [ 23/May/13 ]

I CAN UNDERSTAND IF IT IS FOR A MOAT OR SOMETHING BUT AGAIN, WATER WOULD BE MORE EFFECTIVE BECAUSE IF YOU FALL IN YOU CAN SURVIVE. IF IT IS FOR LIGHTING, USE A TORCH!!! IT IS EASIER AND CHEAPER AND FASTER TO MAKE!! THANKYOU.

Comment by vincent wayne collins [ 23/May/13 ]

WHY IS ANYONE EVEN PLACING LAVA IN THE END?!! WATER IS MORE EFFECTIVE AGAINST ENDERMEN AS IT DOSENT BURN THE ENDER PEARL(S) THAT THEY DROP!!! SERIOUSLY!! WHY?!!

Comment by WolfieMario [ 16/Mar/13 ]

Now, hang on a second.

"Lava flows faster in the nether. This is an intentional change. Why did it change? Because we felt that it should."

I can respect that change, but this report also applies to lava flowing quickly in the End. Dinnerbone, is that intentional too?

Comment by Markku [ 25/Jan/13 ]

A bit of a repeat, sorry, but since this is definitely confirmed as "lava flows faster in Nether because Mojang thinks it should", how is the status of MC-4631 considered by Mojang? Is it fixed (but not told about)? Or is it really intended, i.e. does Mojang think that while lava flows faster, it should still decay super-slow (as if in cold place)?

Considering the technical findings behind the issue, I have a reason to think the decay had become even slower than what had been really intended, and now that lava flow rate in nether has been (or will be) increased, it might be an idea to remove that slow down of decay in Nether (and End if it flows faster there, too).

The Minecraft Wiki is a community run website - anyone can add/change things.

Comment by Harvey [ 25/Jan/13 ]

Well I guess there is no point in trying to defend this "bug" anymore since it was meant to be intentional. Could you do something for me at least? Could you update the Minecraft wiki on the change since no one actually found this to be an "update" yet. Keep in mind that most people don't play the snapshot as often as the real game. I however play with the latest because I want to help submit bugs now. I found the water suffocation and the nether void falling bugs during the 1.3 snapshots. Had I known of a way to submit bugs I would have told you about them before Minecraft had to go into 1.3.2.

Lastly can you make it clear on twitter or Reddit that lava is meant to do this. Share with everyone before the 1.5 update is released so that no one submits another bug report like this one. I personally disagree with the change in lava, but I respect your decision in doing so. I will still submit bugs when I see them in the snapshots, as that is their sole purpose. I'm not angry at you, I just wanted a clarification before pursuing the topic any further.

Comment by Harvey [ 25/Jan/13 ]

On the Minecraft Wiki, there is no clarification that this is part of the game, and the only people would would know is via this bug tracking thread. On the wiki, it says:

Nether
Added Nether Quartz Ore around the Nether to encourage exploration of the dimension

Nothing on lava, and it actually discourages people from exploring the nether if the lava is flowing extremely fast. I would like a response from Dinnerbones besides that " ", and clarify why this was changed in Minecraft.

Comment by Tails [ 25/Jan/13 ]

The resolution of this ticket "works as intended" was done by Dinnerbone himself. Is that not official enough?

Comment by Harvey [ 25/Jan/13 ]

So what you are saying is that they want the game to feel bad and nerfing lava and bone meal is the way to go? Dinnerbones commented here, and there is no offical "update" on the Minecraft forums or Mojang.com that confirms that lava was meant to flow faster in the Nether and in The End. Its honestly not fun at all to go to the nether and have to be outrunned by lava.

Comment by Anon Ymus [ 25/Jan/13 ]

It's not a bug, so of course it isn't fixed!

Comment by Harvey [ 25/Jan/13 ]

Still not fixed in 13w04a. This is a serious bug because we can't go into the nether without fear that a fast flow of lava will consume us and grief the mess out of the place. In the current version, lava from the ceiling can quickly be plugged just in time before the lava flows. It makes searching for quartz very unfun.

On an unrelated note, Everyone from my snapshot video is leaving comments on how the disprove the bone meal nerf. How about making it so that ever difficulty level has a different effect? Easy =same before the snapshot, Normal = Half of the current snapshot, Hard = Just like 13w04a snapshot. Just a thought Dinnerbones.

Comment by Markku [ 18/Jan/13 ]

If you mean that the other issue was resolved by Dinnerbone? Nope, only moderators have commented or changed the state of that issue.

Comment by Oscar Parker [ 18/Jan/13 ]

Not just moderators, but Dinnerbone himself, no less.

Comment by Markku [ 18/Jan/13 ]

If this is intended, then perhaps take a closer look at MC-4631, too. Sounds really stupid if lava now flows super-fast (in Nether and End), but decays super-slow (everywhere). (Since the issue is marked resolved by moderators, there is not much hope it will ever get into Mojang's attention without some "spamming"..)

Comment by [Mojang] Nathan Adams [ 18/Jan/13 ]

Comment by Harvey [ 17/Jan/13 ]

So how come this wasn't fixed in the latest snapshot :O?

Comment by Oscar Parker [ 17/Jan/13 ]

As it applies to The End too, it mustn't be intentional (why would lava flow faster in The End? It looks & feels cold!)

Comment by Tails [ 15/Jan/13 ]

Applies to The End aswell.

Comment by MegaScience [ 15/Jan/13 ]

But in my test, something forced the lava to update quicker than usual in the Overworld. It seems to be caused by some process in the background, because I didn't see anything specifically cause it. But the lava definitely flowed much quicker to the furthest it could reach at one point.

Comment by Maarten Thijs [ 14/Jan/13 ]

@Kumasasa Of course it is, it was so hot it turned some netherack into quartz :0

Comment by Kumasasa [ 14/Jan/13 ]

@Meta: Is The Nether hotter in 13w02b than in 1.4.7 ?

Comment by Meta [ 14/Jan/13 ]

Maybe that's intented because it is very hot there and stuff ... you know?

Comment by Tails [ 14/Jan/13 ]

Confirmed, Lava flows way faster in the Nether than Overworld, which it did not do before.

Comment by Markku [ 14/Jan/13 ]

Speculation: the "occasionally flows fast, but then normally slow" could be some kind of block update scheduling bug; i.e. some circumstance causes the flowing blocks to be updated in rapid succession. Perhaps the flow to next block causes itself such an update?

Comment by Markku [ 14/Jan/13 ]

While checking the lava bug, I did first think too that lava would flow faster (water rate) in Nether, but seems this is not the case. The inherent update period for lava seems to be longer (i.e. slower) for lava, no matter where it is. That was/is 1.4.7 state. I'll recheck.

EDIT: yep, the tickrate value is 5 for water, 30 for lava, and it does not check where it is. Lava does have an additional slowdown for the decreasing flow direction (i.e. when source block is removed or otherwise lessening flow), but even that is (was?) independent of where it is.

Comment by Kumasasa [ 14/Jan/13 ]

Isn't that so that Lava flows in the Nether like water (7 blocks wide, fast) compared to the overworld (3 blocks wide, slow) ?

Comment by MegaScience [ 14/Jan/13 ]

Earlier today someone told me that lava seems to move faster in the snapshot. I went ingame to test, and the results were a bit strange. Testing at a blacksmith, enclosing an area around it with cobble, I tested by breaking the cobble to let the lava flow. While in most cases, it took two seconds for the lava to flow another block, I did notice test where the lava suddenly flowed 2-3 times all at once. I couldn't reproduce this after it happened, but it seems something caused it to update faster than usual. Requires further testing.

Comment by Harvey [ 14/Jan/13 ]

Well after redoing the bug, I noticed it only flows extremely fast in the Nether. I have provided a small video clip that shows exactly what I mean in this comment. Look at it and you can see a huge difference in speed compared to the overworld. If this was intentional, please tell jeb/dinnerbones to return it back to the way it was. There is no reaction time possible in plugging lava that is flowing from the top and makes mining quartz very difficult.
